Why is Cross-Country's delay-repay bot badly programmed?

On 15 April I journeyed from Radley to Southampton Central, Radley depart 0804, CrossCountry due to depart Reading 0853 cancelled. CrossCountry's delay-repay bot responded as follows: To their credit, GWR's bot said: GWR's bot could, of course, explain better: 'the service which caused your...

    Harwich gangway broken Oct 2023

The gangway currently has a 'technical problem'. Stena are using a minibus to load and unload foot passengers. Does any forum member know what's gone wrong this time, and whether and when it may be mended?

Where will GWR terminate when the line is closed for works at Old Oak Common?

At the GWR community event on 13 September, Mark Hopwood mentioned that there will be weeks / months (I didn't understand which) when all tracks on the GW main line are closed at Old Oak Common, at some phase(s) of the major works to create the platforms for Elizabeth Line (and other??) trains...

    Weird suggestion from fastjp

Why would the normally excellent fastjp (a) suggest going anywhere else overnight, if you miss the last train from Oxford to Radley on a Saturday evening; (b)choose Kingham in particular?

Wrong platform information for trains from Radley to Oxford, 9 June

Can any forum member throw light on the weirdness that the TIGER feed, and the platform 2 screen, and the NRE website, wrongly show that today's Very Short Term plan trains from Didcot to Oxford are running wrong line?

Signalling for running wrong line Oxford to Radley

GWR is currently running some shuttles Oxford<>Radley. They run 'wrong line' Hinksey to Radley. Why does the driver have to be talked past each signal, and have a pilotman? I thought there was advanced bidirectional signalling on this stretch.

    The name "varsity line"

Discussion of the former LNWR lines (plural) from Bletchley to Cambridge, and Bletchley to Oxford, has for some years claimed that they were collectively known as "the Varsity line". I was at one of the universities in the 1960s, and unwisely had a girlfriend in the other. It was indeed possible...

(Edited) Could some class 755 FLIRTS be procured for the Thames Valley?

I recently had the pleasure of travelling from Stowmarket (incidentally, what a lovely station!) to Bury St Edmunds. It struck me that the, also lovely, 755 was a bit wasted, because (I think) it was only electric from Ipswich to Stowmarket. If The Railway had a Guiding Mind, would it think it...

How do ticket machines decide what order to print a clutch of tickets?

I've just collected a clutch of tickets from the (sole) ticket machine at Radley. (It failed to print one of them, which is why I noticed the order of printing. However, that failure is not the topic of this thread.) The tickets are advances for 2 people Liverpool Street>Colchester...

RET new station at Hoek van Holland Haven

Is there an opening date fixed? Will the new station have ticket machine(s) which are more user-friendly than the the one at the historic rail station? Have I rightly understood that for a Hoek to Schiedam (or beyond on RET) journey, a RET 2-hour (or some such?) ticket is (marginally?) cheaper...

Which train company brand names does the public know and use, and why?

My friends and acquaintances generally say they get "the Eurostar" to (eg) Paris. They don't specify whether they get "the GWR" to Paddington, or "the Chiltern" to Marylebone. And friends in Surrey don't say they get "the Southwest" to Waterloo. Friends in Brighton just say they can't understand...

Cornish sleeper empties tour via Didcot and Newbury

Please could a forum member throw light on why 5A50, 0734 from Paddington to Reading Train Care Depot, this morning (30 April) went via Didcot (reverse), Newbury (or maybe only Newbury Racecourse?), reverse, and Reading (reverse). Crew training? A splendid sight it made at Didcot.

    1. Lunch & 2. Oyster procedure, at Stratford

Advice please. On 16 September, my wife & I will be travelling from Brondesbury to Norwich. We plan to get to Stratford with an ultra-cautious margin ( ~ 1 hour) for our booked train to Norwich at 1338. We'll be using Oyster or contactless for the leg from Brondesbury. a. Is there anywhere...

    Machynlleth around 1400 31 July 2021

Can any forum member throw light on what will happen at Machynlleth around 1400 on 31 July 2021 (and other Saturdays, I think)? The train I'm booked on, 2I18 is due to arrive at platform 1 at 1353. It terminates, but doesn't seem to shunt anywhere. TfW's (edit) journey planner tells me to change...

Negative easement 700948: mustn't go via Oxford

This monster deserves a thread of its own, I think: 700948 (Circuitous Route) Journeys from or via Princes Risborough to or via London stations are not valid via Oxford. this circuitous route easement applies in both directions. It thus purports to stop you, for example, from using a Charlbury...

Walking from Abingdon Junction to Radley

The diary of William Wood records on several occasions in the 1850s that he got a train to Abingdon Junction (not Abingdon) and then walked to Radley College. However, MacDermot's History says that the platforms at the junction were 'never a station in the ordinary sense of the word and did not...

'Wrong' line signals south of Kennington Junction

Please could forum member(s) explain why the signals before Kennington Junction on the 'wrong' line show puzzling (to me) yellows? Signal 2343, immediately before the junction, is reassuringly always red. But signal 2337 always shows yellow, and signal 2331 double yellow - even when there's a...
