firstly , drivers rest days dont effect me . I'm not one . Im merely pointing out why your suggestion wouldn't work , unless you chucked loads of money at them . At whcih point it begs the question why not just over resource the job instead .

The idea of part time train drivers working to different T's & C's as a solution to this is IMO a non starter , even if you ignore the fact that it would spark a dispute immediately. The occassions that I have seen drivers (or guards) work part time contracts because of a job sharing...

To be fair in my experience checking diagrams is not just useful for spotting illegalities with them ,ive never known of cases of LTP diagrams being illega because generally they will be produced by software . Have however heard of it with STP diagrams that sometimes have an element of human...

Bringing sundays inside the working week is seemingly beyond the imagination of the key protagonists at the DFT , or is beyond the spending power of the treasury .

I think you have fundamentally misunderstood what was meant by that comment . Base rosters (aka links) are a negotiable item as part of the collective bargaining agreement at most (if not all) TOC's. So the reps have input into the base roster , but also ultimately with it being a negotiable...

    UK General Election 2024

Its giving the energy of that time they launched a scheme to get "low level offenders" on day release to drive lorries to help with the national shortage . Only the guy that was featured in the news report with Dominic Raab was on day release for drug smuggling offences involving a lorry...

That isn't really a drivers job , their job is to come to work and drive the trains they are rostered to , to the places they are supposed to go . Organising the service patterns, planning resourcing ,and all the other stuff that goes into actually making a service run is what the management...

    A career as a signaller

IST can be at any of the training centres across the UK , they will basically send you wherever they have places , if they can get you a place at York I am sure they will because it saves travel expenses . But it is not unheard of for people to have to travel far for IST either .

    Decisions, decisions.

Definitely a decision only you can make . Few things I would consider though , is there any chance that the Overtime at your current place could dry up ? What doors would the job at Network rail open for you , would there be other roles you could progress into (obviously not guranteed ) How...

It will also give you a good idea of how even the most experienced can make what in isolation seem like fundamentally basic errors .

Other than that , brushing up on your phonetic alphabet if it isn't already second nature to you . Some on my course learnt bell codes before the course , these will be relevant if you are doing Absolute Block IST , I believe there is an android app provided by Network Rail for this purpose ...

Tbh the actual process of signalling isn't the difficult part , its knowing your rules and dealing with all of the things that go wrong in accordance with those rules . Plus one of the core skills that you are constantly assessed on which is safety critical comms isn't used on SimSig.

    A career as a signaller

The initial signaller training is currently setup as 2 weeks of e learning and 10 weeks in a classroom , if you do absolute block initial signaller training then you will also have to do a 2 week track circuit block conversion if you are to work a track circuit block location . The E learning...

    A career as a signaller

Rosters vary from place to place as they are subject to negotiation locally between union reps and the company . Wether you are relief or resident there will be a pattern so you can work out your days off in advance , if you are a relief then you won't find out what actual shift you are working...

The advertised Salary is the basic so for grade 6 its £44,373 . Sundays are outside the working week so paid additionally to this . Hours actually worked on the Sunday are at 150% . Hours worked between 22:00 and 06:00 are paid an additional 10% - it works out at an extra £19.5 for a...

Last train cancelled - Northern told me to pay for taxi. Are they allowed to?

Well then as was the case here you have to wait until one is . Completely agree , on the flip side would people be complaining if the TOC didn't offer the alternative in the case of an extremely long wait ?

Who responds to level crossing failures?

When a crossing is under Local control the signaller must tell the attendant in time to allow the barriers to be lowered for the appraching train . The driver will be stopped at a signal before the crossing , told what is happening and told to approach the crossing at caution . Then depending...

Whats the chances of getting a job as a trainee mainline driver without experience?

Definitely not true at all TOC's , I know plenty who have gone from Conductor & Station grades to Driving at Northern and TPE . They still do the apprenticship as well .
