Station secrets - tips and tricks

If your train arrives at platform 16 at Euston, when exiting the station, turn right onto the exit onto Drummond Street, walk down Melton Street and turn left again where the Cafe Nero is, continue ahead to enter the tube station via the stairs. The two times I took this route, I seemed to be...

    Signalling to help the schedules?

Someone I used to work with said that at the country end of Stratford Station there is a sign saying ‘Romford?’ which he said was to get train drivers to remember whether they had to stop next at Romford Station. I think the sign was there because the vast majority of trains do not stop at...

Viaducts built as four-track from the start?

Was the eastern approach viaduct to Birmingham New Street station built as four tracks?

How does Waterloo only get 60 million passengers yet each SWR train I get is packed like sardines?

I might be wrong here, but I do think Waterloo serves areas that have a higher proportion who workers who WFH regularly than other London termini. So passenger numbers at Waterloo will struggle to recover compared to other London termini.

TOCs not releasing cheap Advance tickets

I think there is, providing it is only a few pounds. A lot of seats have restricted views which many will want to avoid. Some may want to sit in the middle of the carriage where there are possibly less people walking past, or alternatively close to doors so they can get off quickly. A lot of...

    Avanti West Coast Cancellations

The problem with the stats is that they do not take into account how busy trains are and therefore the likelihood of a passenger rather than a train experiencing a delay. In my experience train punctuality is a lot better during the off-peak period than the peak periods, however trains are far...

Should GBR split the rail network by region or by traffic type?

Given the current structure of the railways, I think it would be easier to split the network into regions. Most of the current operators should fit well into a particular region, though placing CrossCountry and Transpennine Express into a geographical region would be tricky. I think the...

Is ‘train station’ replacing ‘railway station’ in UK passenger rail terminology?

Agree, I think most people just call railway or train stations, ’the station’ and add the prefix bus, underground, tube, subway or metro to station to describe stations for non national rail services.

Is ‘train station’ replacing ‘railway station’ in UK passenger rail terminology?

Over the past year, I have increasingly noticed that many, perhaps even the majority of the public call stations ‘train stations’ rather than ‘railway stations’. ‘Railway station’ to me always seemed to the more typical way to describe National Rail stations in British English. Is this change in...

The Great British Train Scandal (Channel 5)

To me, it felt like the producers had cherry picked a journey that they suspected would have a high chance of going wrong, hence making the railway industry look bad. First potential issue is the first leg involved a CrossCountry service from Bristol to Birmingham, a route that is known to have...

Aslef strikes over Trains Modernisation plan

The Evening Standard is reporting that these strikes have now been cancelled. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/tube-strike-called-off-london-underground-aslef-drivers-b1149403.html In my experience, tube strikes tend to get cancelled after negotiations.

Which specific train journey is the most profitable in the UK?

My guess would be the Stansted Express as it is the only rail transport option to Stansted Airport and I suspect a high proportion, if not most passengers using the service are travelling from London to Stansted airport, so are paying the higher Stansted airport fare.

Will we ever see a replacement for Concorde ?

Personally I think there would be quite a demand for supersonic flight, but mostly from very wealthy leisure passengers who want to experience supersonic travel.

Hull Trains weekend first class offering

I am thinking of visiting Hull on a Sunday from London. Their first class advance ticket for the return on the day and time I am looking at is only £15 more than the standard class ticket. What food offering do Hull Trains give on first class on Sunday? Their website suggests it is a sandwich...

HS2 Manchester leg scrapped: what should happen now?

HS2 does look like it is a more a direct route than the WCML, so that has to be a factor as well. I am not sure of the exact comparison in distance though.

    Avanti West Coast Cancellations

This Saturday does look like a better Saturday than last Saturday, “only” 23 cancellations and 24 other service updates (mostly part cancellations) at 08:00 this morning according to Avanti JourneyCheck. Of course, if you are have booked one of those cancelled trains, this will be of no...

How the term "rail replacement bus" is viewed.

I was on a rail replacement bus from Dover to Deal a few years ago in which a double decker urban bus was used and I definitely recall the bus struggled to access some of the railway stations due to the narrow lanes. Rural stations in many cases would be better served by mini buses which are...

Raising speed limit on A roads for PCVs.

The issue with single carriage rural roads is that they vary from National Highways truck A roads which are largely straight with 3.5 metre lanes to winding country lanes with hedgerows on both sides that are too narrow for two cars to pass. It has always amazed the latter typically has a 60 mph...
