Does anyone know the timing, from Lime Stree,t of the first 319? I'd assumed it would be 06.16 but I see there's a 05.15 departure, too.

Before I conclude this, I think you’ll also agree that we should also mention Phil Wieland’s parallel webpages – NW Sparks – with its excellent live track signalling diagrams.

Paul,

Blush!

Stuck in work tonight, I'm afraid, so no chance of making the first runs, but I might go for the first electric train to call at Huyton, at 08:40. (If I've got the workings right.)

Cheers,

Phil

However, I’m sure you’ll agree that I can’t let this opportunity pass without acknowledging the fantastic input from ‘ LDECRexile’ – Dave - in the form of his highly detailed and comprehensive photographic record of Electrification in the NW, which some of us have had the privilege and generosity to contribute to, embellished by informative, inclusive text with the occasional slice of humour added.

Yes not met Phil but sent a few photos to him on the Blackpool-Manchester section. I met Dave and had a fantastic day out with him between xmas and new year when I was home from the USA. Wonderful job guys -thanks for everything. :D

Still dark in Lea Green 0615 ...a four car rather quiet train just went past the back of our house...

They're here!

319363 just pulled into St Helens Junction bound for Manchester Airport.

Yay!! My apologies for getting the info wrong there. It just looked at time as if the 319 move had been pulled. Good news indeed that it hasn't!! :D

Edit: And by the way, welcome to the start of the electric era!!! (posted from my 333 commute into Bradford FS)

Just back from a 06.21 Wavertree-Manchester Airport return trip. Everything went well. On the return trip the train was held for 5 or 6 minutes at Newton - le - Willows because it had got ahead of time.

Brilliant!, shows 319 performance IS better than 156s and 150s! ... it will be good when the timetable is tightened up (in May?), by the time they reach MIA it could be a saving of 12-15 mins?

Being off work and Whiston Station around the corner, went to record my first electric passenger train on the L&M line - 319363 on 1H45 09.16 Liverpool Lime St - Manchester Airport, while 30 seconds earlier 319262 wizzed through on 1F93 08.40hrs Manchester Airport - Liverpool Lime St.

Certainly 319363 made very light work of the incline and definitely much faster going through than the usual Class 156. Well, it has only taken 185 years to get here but it has finally happened. :) You will note both Class 319's are in the image with 319362 in the distance.

Apart from the Class 185 and Class 172, I can't think of many DMU classes (not DEMU) that don't have (at least almost) comparable acceleration to an EMU, even supposedly slow ones like 319, 321, 455 etc. Being used to EMU classes 450 and 455, it feels almost painful watching a 165 accelerate away from a station  (but always impressed by a Class 360 :P).

Also: Excellent shot :D. Looking at the timetable there appear to be many opportunities for fast running, and knowing how good the 319s sound has made me want to come all the way up there to have a ride on them . Time for a Cheshire Day Ranger? ;)

Unlikely before all the via-Huyton services are electric (ie MIA/MCV/WGN/WBQ) and a general recast is done.
December maybe?
Lots of time is wasted in the Castlefield corridor in the current timetable.
Platforming at the Airport should improve as well when P4 comes into use.

Well I'm currently sat on 319363 waiting to leave LIV.

They have scrubbed up really well. Clean and comfy (although the low seats might get annoying)

Just spoken to a driver who said that they are good units and the public seem to like them so far.

I'll try and post a pic or 2 later.

Hi everyone, first post on this remarkable thread (on which I have followed and caught up on every posting from post #1, firsrtly as a 'guest' and now as a member..) on what must be considered a truly momentous day in the history of the L&M route, and another significant milestone in the upgrades and electrification of the railways of the Northwest of England :) I thought the first trial runs of 319s, and test car Mentor a couple of weeks ago were historic enough.. but of course successful introduction into service of the first fare paying electric units today is what is really important, and what all the huge amount of effort and resources has all been leading up to...
So congrats to all involved professionally... and congrats to forum members who were able to take part today, either on board or lineside... And especial thanks and appreciation to everyone who has contributed to this remarkable record of progress, most notably, of course, LDECRexcile... :)

Re. Performance.

If the run out of wavertree we've just had is anything to go by, they're considerably faster than a 156, it was easy doing 75-80 by the time we reached broad green.

We were doing 90 through Huyton, Whiston and Rainhill. Epic machines.

Went to Rainhill Station to see & photograph 319363 on 1F95 10.40hrs MA-LV and 1H48 12.15hrs LV-MA - well it had to be done given the historic location but interestingly both footbridges at the station have had temporary wooden top boards placed on the north side of the steps to prevent anyone getting near to the wires! Chatted to an NR guy who confirmed that NR wil have to chat to the local council / conservation group about how to readdress this problem with permanent fixings. Obviously an afterthought by NR but certainly the east footbridge is now a little unsightly now.

Possibly a harder question to answer: with the 319's replacing a couple of DMU's on this service when are other services likely to see that stock appearing to strengthen them? Will they be in reserve still on this route for a while in case of any problems with the 319s or will they be deployed elsewhere quite rapidly?

VERY unlikely at present.
The number of units currently being cascaded is covering the number of units being lent to TPE to cover the loss of the 170's basically. You may find an extra couple available in few months but this isn't a huge route they have done. Currently 1tph Airport, 1tph Warrington, 1tph Victoria, 1tph Blackpool, 2tph Wigan.
Although there will be more at peak times you won't release a lot.
There aren't enough 319's here yet to cover all of these.

They do look surprisingly good in Northern Trains colours.

Even with only a third of the front being yellow it can be seen how well it stands out on 319362. It must be very exciting for those using this route with more to come.
