Good morning,

Have the TOCs stopped the Print at Home Tickets facility in recent months? I have done bookings with Virgin East and West Coast and Chiltern all of whom I am sure I have been able to print at home in the past, but this option was not offered. I selected to collect at my local station TVM.

Makes sense. Their old system was very onerous on the customer (in the case of Virgin, requiring nominated ID), removed customer rights, and was limited to a journey involving just one TOC only. It was totally unfit for purpose.

The new system will be barcode based and will be fully inter-available.

P@H tickets are ideal for me but may not suit everybody.

I thought all print at home tickets required nominated ID? Otherwise you could print off as many copies as you wanted and sell them on to any Tom, Dick or Harry.

My recent XC e-tickets haven't had my name on.

e-tickets are different, as there is only ticket, like a paper ticker issued at a station. But a print at home ticket can be printed as many times as you want. There has to be a way to know there is only one being used. They really aren't an ideal solution, but I prefer them to an eticket, as the battery can't go flat, or the screen fail, or any other manner of problems, and you are then stuck. Nothing, for me, has beaten the orange paper ticket at the moment.

An e-ticket, in the proper terminology, is a record in a database. You can obtain a reference to it in all sorts of ways, but it's a record in a database that is what holds the validity, not whatever reference to it the passenger holds, as long as they hold a reference to it in some acceptable form and any required ID that allows them to establish that they are actually entitled to travel using it.

It is OK if it is an advance ticket. It comes with a seat reservation, noone else can be using it, so they can be printed, no ID. Other ticket types need ID to stop everyone printing off multiple copies.

If the ticket is held on a central database then, in theory, there is no problem. In practice it is only effective if the ticket only needs to be scanned at a fixed location where the scanner is on-line.

Trouble is with so many ungated stations, guards with 600 +pax to check how often will they be scanned anyway ?

The ticket does not need to be on a central database, but records of it being scanned do. If it scanned while the device is offline, that information can be sent to the database subsequently. That is relatively low risk as it would be very difficult to plan for the ticket to be scanned by an offline device.
