Good Morning,

All being well, I shall be 60 in early October and am looking to purchase the Senior Railcard, one of the perks of getting older. I see that it costs £ 30.00 for one year, or £70.00 for 3 years if bought online which I would do. How far in advance can I buy this card, I just tried and was rejected as it said date of birth not valid?? thanks.

More postcode lottery , nothing offered in Herefordshire as far as I can see .

Thanks for the replies, I will try online again in Mid September, I just checked by Local and County Councils, but they don't seem to be as generous as the one mentioned above in the Selby area.

Thank you for that! I see it applies to some other railcards too.
Yes and the Tesco deal for £10 Clubcard vouchers = 1 Railcard must have brought a fair number off new customers to the railway who would have not been willing to pay the £30 direct fee from the railways.

Including me. Then my line was useless for leisure travel for most of the year due to electrification work meaning no later evening returns. Now Covid restrictions. And no longer through trains from Lancashire to Buxton. And no longer through trains to Scotland - used to really enjoy a day trip to Edinburgh.

I will not be renewing my railcard until Covid has gone. Better to travel by car than risk catching it off fellow passengers or having to wear a mask.

I guess Covid 19 will not go but become another virus that mutates and circulates mostly in the background causing a nuisance from time to time, but we will start to live as normal and accept the risk. Just as we lived with the risk of polio when I was a child.

I’m 60 soon and tried a dummy run setting my birthday as a week from now. It said ‘enter a valid date of birth e.g. 22/1/2003’. Oh.

I’ll try again when I get home.

You can buy online from a couple of weeks before your 60th birthday.

Yes, which is why I tried to pretend-buy it as if my 60th birthday were this week, and it rejected me, saying a birthdate of 2003 (Edit, 2001) was a suitable date. I will try again now and report back.

Hi, here it is

The stupidly ambiguous error message "Please enter a valid Date of Birth for this Railcard" is actually complaining about the format, not the value, of your date of birth. For whatever reason, your web browser is inputting the date in the incorrect format "XX SEP 1960" instead of "XX/09/1960". The two attachments below show that using the Google Chrome browser on my Windows computer and Android phone the date is formatted correctly (and the website allows me to continue in both cases). If you cannot manually override the date format, you'll have to use a different browser (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge all work for me, although interestingly in Edge the format provided and enforced is "1960-09-01" instead).

By the way, if you enter a too young date of birth you instead get the message "The date of birth that you have provided does not match the conditions for purchasing this Railcard" next to the date box as shown in the last attachment.
