Hi Folks,

Due to the pandemic, my photography and video business is essentially getting little to no work and until events come screaming back (which doesn’t look likely till late next year), I’m wondering if there’s anywhere hiring on some shape or form? So not to sound naive, I’m aware that I probably don’t have the right prior training for depot work but I’d be willing to learn and tend to be a quick learner. I live next to haymarket depot if that’s any help

If they’re hiring, I’d also considering looking at station staff also.

I realise I’m possibly sounding daft and I’d rather ask than not ask at all. I also ask that if you intend to be snarky in your reply, I’ve had to deal with some real lows of having my world turned upside down so I ask for people to show restraint if they intend to be a bit harsh in their reply.

Thanks to anyone who can help or give an insight.

Cheers!
Ben

Sorry to hear that things are difficult at the moment.

The best advice is generally to set up a profile with your local TOCs (presumably Avanti and Scotrail). You should be able to view vacancy lists and set up job alerts. It probably goes without saying but if something comes up which takes your fancy you should apply ASAP as TOCs have a habit of taking adverts down before the closing date if they’re inundated with applications.

Scotrail have vacancies now and then. Network Rail had a project and planning assistant, though im not sure if that was entry level.

I'm looking at jobs too.

Keep checking Scotrail for vacancies and also Network Rail websites.

Network rail appear to have more live opportunities at the moment, Scotrail have had only a few external since the summer. For time reference i'm awaiting interview for a position I applied for in August in Scotrail so it's certainly not a quick process.

Good luck with moving forward. Hope you find something soon.

I'm not too sure how ScotRail work with train cleaning, whether it's in house or contracted out. Might be worth a look though mainly night work when trains are in depots.

I seen on the Glasgow Central programme previously that it was Mitie who looked like they were providing the station cleaning.

Also on Gumtree there was a post for cleaners for Haymarket Station through Pristine Cleaning services. Wouldn't hurt to enquire surely due to the high level of cleaning they need to be doing now.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the heads up and I appreciate any pointers. I'll maybe see if I can get some work with Scotrail/Network Rail but if anyone who works in the industry happens to hear of anything, last resort cleaners, I'd be interested. I'll need to sit down and write a CV for the first time in around 7 years but just shows how times have changed (albeit hopefully temporary).

Be it liaison/customer service station staff, I would say I have good people skills being that i was dealing with crowds of people everyday with events and have a thick-ish skin for nonsense and people that are drunk/under the influence.

Also thanks to any well wishes received, i appreciate it. Hope everyone else is coping ok and despite my situation I always leave my inbox open to anyone who needs a chat during these challenging times.
