Here's a video of it.
Second biggest gold vault in the world apparently.

The largest amount stored in one place being at the Federal Reserve in New York, which probably has a subway train running past it too to bring it back to topic ;)

Bit of a tangent but does any noise emit from HS1, through East London?

The new S stock on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines has been raising complaints about noise and vibration from residents of the Barbican estate.

Something very similar to the deep level lines causing vibrations in London also happens in Glasgow, particularly on Buchanan Street where the Subway is shallow between Buchanan Street and St Enochs stations. When you are in a shop on Buchanan Street or even outside you can sometimes hear the trains accelerating below.

The Athenaeum Theatre of the former RSAMD had the dubious benefit of noises off from both the Subway and the Queen Street Low Level lines during quieter moments in student operatic performances. (They moved to new purpose built premises in 1988 and have since become The Royal Conseratoire of Scotland).

The gold in that Bank of England pic might be gold plated titanium - as China once found out when it received what it thought was gold from the USA

More to the point though, until recently those vaults were a problem because they blocked a southward extension from the Northern City line at Moorgate. However if my understanding is correct the Crossrail / Elizabeth line is now also in the way.

Regarding train noise in a house, I live above the Central line somewhere between Gants Hill and Newbury Park stations and when I moved in I could often hear and feel (vibration) from trains passing below. However even before I had moved in my new neighbours had been in contact with LU about this (I did not mind, but my neighbours were not happy) and LU did something that reduced the noise.

Even so, if I had a late night then at around 1:20 am (very approximate time) I would hear and feel what I guessed was an engineering train on its way somewhere - it was more like a slow long rumble than regular passenger trains.

Even today I sometimes hear a faint 'clickety clack' sound of a train going over a track joint. Mostly though when in the back garden. My only regret is not having a viewing periscope attached to a night vision camera to watch and film it passing by!

I have attended events at The British Library conference centre at St Pancras where the tube can be heard. Also meeting rooms in a hotel basement Near Warren Street station appear to be adjacent to the Victoria line.

Pedantry note - it'll almost certainly be the Sub-Surface lines under Euston Road you can hear, not the actual tubes.

Not London, I know, but the Merseyrail Loop can sometimes be heard in the auditorium of the Empire Theatre by Lime Street station. Not every train is audible, I think they must set up a resonance when running at a particular speed. Do any West End theatres suffer from this problem? I know that recording venues in London have to be carefully sited to avoid underground noise.

Theres a fair few buildings in Liverpool where you can clearly hear Merseyrail underneath, World Museum and H&m for a start.

There used to be a second-hand bookshop in Berry Street, called Waterston's (not to be confused with Waterstone, it was later bought by Michael McCabe, who is now in London Road); in the cellar you were next door to the tunnel between Central and St James, and trains could be heard very clearly.

Cineworld Haymarket you could hear the trains rumble over the film.
Well they shouldn't leave the film on the track. The Northern line can be heard quite distinctly from inside properties along Clapham High Road, and stretches of track were equipped with rubber 'boots' to cushion the rails on the metal chair bases.

Same on Arygle St, if you go to the WH Smith basement on Argyle St , trains can clearly be felt and heard.

By "Clapham High Road", do you mean Clapham Road, or Clapham High Street - or is there really a Clapham High Road??

My office was in the basement of a building near Warren Street and movements on the Victoria Line could just about be heard when working at weekends when the office was quiet and empty.

You can hear the tube if using the gents' toilet at the rather splendid (in terms of both beer & architecture) Blackfriar pub across the road from Blackfriars station. I think it might be too far from the District/Circle line - could it be the Waterloo & City?

My sister once lived in a house that was above the Piccadilly line between Manor House and Turnpike Lane. Every time the train went past you heard the rumbling noise and it was quite prominent, but it didn’t make anything rattle or shake like you may expect with, say, a lorry going past the house on an uneven road.

On a similar nature from my workplace I can hear trains go past underneath even though the line isn’t directly beneath our office. You can even tell which way it’s going as in one way you can hear the jingling associated with crossing a rail joint. Unlike in my sister’s old house, it isn’t obvious and you can only hear if it’s silent and you’re actually listening out.

Mojo

My Aunt lived in Chesterifeld Gdns ( no 10) Also between Manor House anf Turnpike Lane horth of Harringay Stadium Stn and you heard the very low rumble as they passed underneath, but it was only noticable when the TV wasn't on and there was a lull in the conversation

Can you hear the Jubilee line from anywhere?

I've noticed it's one of the deeper tube lines, as it is an absolute pain to ascend the multiple escalators at Canary Wharf, and at most stations there are some rather long escalators.

I know there is one section of the JLE that is very loud and almost defeaning, I think it's near Canada Water.

Pretty much the entirety of the JLE is known for being rather loud, at least onboard! Southwark - London Bridge comes to mind as particularly loud from memory

In London N19 we are some 8 or so minutes from the northern Line station Tufnell Park, no doubt coming up from & going via Euston. We can hear the tube under the house on quiet nights & days . We used to think we heard the clickety clack over rail joins when we slept in the basement.
What we do hear on quiet nights are the nighttime surface trains (Containers?) on the Gospel Oak - Barking line going beside Station Road & under the Junction Road bridge.
Oh and the police Helicopter and the odd ambulance siren. Otherwise its all very peaceful.

I know 2 places in London where you can hear the tube!

Going to the toilets in Pizza Express at tower Hill you can hear the "clickity-clack" of the District and Circle nearby. This was years ago and I dont know if they have done anything since then.

Another place is the toilets at 'Kitchen N1' near Kings Cross. although there is the ventilaion system which is constantly going, listerning closely you can hear the Victoria Line as a faint rumble leaving and entering the station.

I once went to see The Ghost Train (by Arnold Ridley) at Crewe Theatre. At a particular point in the plot the effect of the cast listening for the "ghost" train was rather ruined as a pair of 50s roared past on a Scottish train! (the theatre is about 100 yards from the WCML)

Kitchen N1 is in the same block I work in; when I worked in the basement, the Victoria Line could be heard clearly enough to know whether it was a southbound or a northbound.

Living in a basement flat near Bute St, not far from South Ken station; during the late 60s, l remember the noise and vibration, particularly around 5am when things were otherwise quieter. At least, l think it was the Piccadilly, but in line with most survivors from that era it could have been anything (man).

Talking of Merseyrail, you can hear the vibrations of the passing trains on the Wirral line, city loop when in the famous Cavern Club just after the venue opens every day

When I sit down at the bottom of the Cavern club in Mathew St, I can feel the Merseyrail underground vibrating underneath.

Ironically the the Cavern club was originally demolished to provide a ventilation shaft for the loop line which never happened, the Caverns was later rebuilt by Beatles enthusiast.

The radio theatre in Broadcasting House suffers from tube noise from the Bakerloo line (I think it's in a basement, certainly it's at a relatively low level in the building), to the extent that it's noticeable when you're there but apparently generally not audible on recordings.
It's also clearly audible in All Souls Church (pretty much next door to Broadcasting House), even at balcony level. Probably not helped by the fact that they hollowed out the foundations build the Waldegrave Hall in the basement area

Remember folks Cross/Eliz/Purp line construction under the Barbican centre came with the need to place the trains on floating sleepers (effectively) to stop vibrations and noise.

For a while I worked at offices at 55 Buckingham Gate - a Victorian town-house directly over the District (between St James Park and Victoria). You could feel the floor vibrating every couple of minutes as well as the noise!

The whole area around it is being heavily redeveloped, but 55 is being left alone... the developer wanted to avoid the additional hassle of dealing with LU underneath their shiny new buildings so they have built around it. Behind the rear of 55, the line is open to the surface.
