Evening All,

With 60009 being withdrawn from the main line, I thought it might be appropriate to put a shot of it on the East Coast Main Line in 1994 on YouTube. It was the occasion of it's first visit to Kings Cross in 30 years when it hauled a special train to Peterborough and the Nene Valley Railway organised by Steam Railway magazine.

I filmed it at Offord Cluny between St. Neots and Huntingdon in what some might call 'atmospheric' conditions:

Hope it's of interest.

I don't tend to go in for steam much, but I've always had a soft spot for A4s. A nice video of her in, as you rightly put it, "atmospheric conditions".

I don't feel that conditions detract from it at all though, she still looks very much the part streaking across the landscape.

Thank you for your kind words. Seeing the video for the first time since 1994 reminds me of why we trainspotters used to call them 'streaks' in the 1950s!

I've always considered it to be one of the most befitting nicknames for a class.

You're not wrong there.
My first introduction to the class was through a video tape which included four British Transport Film shorts, one if which was Elizabethan Express.

The sight of Silver Fox hammering up the ECML and just the way the motion connecting the cylinders to the wheels thrashes back and forth and round is quite a site to behold. You can see "all that power and swing" in action to quote the narration.

I travelled as a passenger on the Saturday working. I was the Nene Valley Railway guard for the Sunday working. We joined the train at Peterborough (North) prior to running through to Wansford. The Peterborough guard with us was a mate of mine, so he went to make the tea whilst I was worked the train.

I've also got footage of the train on the NVR; I was a PW volunteer there at the time, so was able to video it from trackside locations. Given time, I'll edit it and get it on YouTube, so watch this space...

That's the romance of steam...

I think it's also the fascination of the mechanics of the motion in action. You don't really see how the power is delivered to the wheels with diesel or electric but one thing which I do like about steam is you can observe the transmission of power

That especially true when they're starting from rest.
