Ideas for the Island Line, such as what to call the new trains?

As for the question about station repaints/colour changes to come up to modern day, they are stuck in the late 60s period but i quite liked that  but yes the new train will look a bit out of place running through stations that are basically in a "heritage state/livery"

Will it? Do 80x and Electrostars look out of place running through Hanwell (which is done out like an olde worlde GWR station), or, er, more 80x, running through a few heritage looking stations knocking about in Yorkshire? It's just a different look and people will get used to it. Less charm, but more practical.

As the Island line is undergoing its biggest upgrade in years, maybe SWR is looking to integrate it further into its network in terms of presentation & appearance?

The 484s are coming with the SWR livery - they could otherwise have a traditional red livery like their precedessors - which leads me to think the IL stations may get a repaint with SWR colours.

The IL might have been treated like an afterthought in previous years as a rural & isolated line that SWT maintained it like a separate division by using a BR Southern region green & cream theme instead of SWT colours.

Going with recent trends like discouraging car use etc - the IL may be getting recognised as worthwhile for investment like possible extensions to Ventnor & Newport also relieving congestion to and from Ryde. Getting on a train from Newport to Ryde then over the Solent and commute up to Waterloo could be attractive.

That was my thought, the 484s could have been painted green or burgundy, likewise interior. I think the opportunity is ripe for a more clean uniform image given the level of investment and the self contained nature of the line .

Going with the craze for naming new trains - how about "Vectis Ryder" for the 484?
Definitely not. “Wight Ryder” has already been used for some years by Wightlink, and “Vectis” by the bus company, so you’d be suggesting various commercial links that just aren’t there.

At a push (very large one), with Ryde Pier Head and Esplanade providing links to Portsmouth...

"Shanklin & City Line"

Could that not be (at an even larger push) "Waterlooville and City Line"? :D

Referring to Queen Victoria's ties to the island - Osborne Line?

Nah, needs something more catchier probably "Island Flyer" or something...

As the previous generation Island Line stock were designated 4-VEC and 3-TIS, there's no reason not to name the new trains as Vectis units. There lots of stuff on the island that uses the Vectis name; the bus company just happens to be one of them.

I am aware that most comments up thread are light-hearted. Is there anything particularly wrong with 'Island Line'? It's a well established brand.

Designations such as 4-VEC and 3-TIS were not really to do with normal publicity, like any other SR stock codes they were for internal use.

What I would do with regard to it is fully integrate it into Southern Vectis's network including branding and ticketing (through tickets from the mainland could be via a Plusbus like scheme). That would make the best use of it.

Of course as a private company Vectis would probably not agree, but this is Speculative Ideas! :)

Well yes, but being totally outside of the normal Southern designations for EMUs it was a sort of a joke that when coupled together they were VEC-TIS trains.

Were the 483s ever given traditional SR designations in the same vein? 2-IOW maybe? Seems to be pot luck whether later units on the mainland were given them, with 442s being 5-WES, 458/0s being 4-JOP, and 450s & 444s being 4-DES & 5-DES respectively. As far as I'm aware, 455s, 456s and Networkers didn't have these designations.

Considering the age of the new sets, how about calling it the "Dinosaur Line"?
Matches the earlier Cretaceous paint job

If the Island Line is a dinosaur, what would that make the Southern coastway lines?
