Are the XC and WM units different internally (seating layout etc)? If not, why not just swap six 2-car XC sets for a similar number of 3-car WM sets, instead of going to the trouble of reforming 12 units? How significant is the cost of changing the livery on 30 cars rather than 6?
The way it is being organised means repainting and refurbishing 6 cars. Swapping the sets over would mean doing the same for 18 cars. Why do that?

Surely a swap would mean repainting/refurbishing 30 cars (6x2 + 6x3).

The 6x2 will need refurbishing regardless as they go to EMR.
Ah, ok, but that does assume that WMR would use them as is until that transfer. Using the word "additional" would have made it much clearer.

170523 has worked 5Z71 Bristol Barton Hill to Tyseley today as a 3 car with 56635 added. It's also renumbered 170623. Individual car numbers are unchanged.

Thanks for the heads-up :) I've been getting the 'new' 170/5s on WMR when possible, had 532/534/535 so far. 533 I am sure I read has been done, just waiting on 530 and 531 now. Fingers crossed they won't be far behind, it's helping to keep me busy with new stuff on my patch until the 196s begin :D

No WMR 3 car sets after this weekend according to a notice posted in the booking on point the other day.

It'll be odd not seeing any more 3-car Flymos up here, and it occurs to me I don't think I have many (if any) photos of 170/6s. How strange, I must have some somewhere in the collection at my Mum's house. Something to try and sort through one day when circumstances with the world health crisis allow me to do so!

170520 went to Barton Hill yesterday for the addition of its centre car which should be 56632.

Should return at 170620

Does that mean it will operate with mixed livery and interior or will it get a refurb before entering traffic?

Before Christmas there was at least 3 centre cars repainted (& presumably refurbished) visible at Barton Hill, so looks like most are ready for reforming

This unit 170533 seen at BNS by a friend today and the cars have regained their original numbers. Most confusing.

Mark
They were renumbered to 50533 & 79533 in error. Individual vehicle numbers are staying the same. Just set numbers changing.

On this point, the centre cars appear not to have changed in terms of the layout with transfer from WMT to XC. They still retain the luggage rack part way down the coach between the doors that they had as WMT which marks them out as different from the original XC centre cars.

Not that this matters much, as the seating is all unreserved in the centre cars anyway.

Have the centre cars had any other work on them except new seat covers? Presumably needed a deep clean too.

The XC 170s are in a very poor state inside, hardly surprising since it's been years since any interior work and don't even have plug sockets/USBs. both the seating and carpets are very worn.
