Must be one of if not the highest percentage rate of preservation for any train class surely?

The only class in recent history to have achieved anything like it would be the 205s, and that really only applies to those left running by the time of the final withdrawal - though even considering that they fared fairly well.

Out of those left by the late 1990s, 205001/009/018/025/028/032/033/205 were preserved, with only 205012 scrapped. 205024 was also scrapped but that had already been out of service.

Of those I think all but 028/032 are runners today.

The 207s also fared well, with all three of the final three units being preserved. Unfortunately the East Lancs unit doesn’t seem to have run for a while, and the Swindon & Cricklade unit was very sadly the victim of an arson attack though thankfully one car was relatively unscathed.

Having said that, I think 121/122 have also done fairly well.

144005 is missing from your list. Are there any 142s at Newton Heath, I thought they all left mid December 2020?

Wouldn't it be ironic if 144012 is the only one to go for scrap!
I know of three people all mates of mine who'd buy it just to wind me up, that damn unit kept evading me!

Excellent piece of work on the update @NorthernSpirit

Couple of quick amendments:

142's ex TfW

Only 002, 073, 074 & 082 are stored at Landore. They will go to Newport for scrap, with 082 likely to be going next week.

010, 075 & 076 while withdrawn, are still at Cardiff. They 'may' come to Landore or maybe kept at Cardiff if there is space, before going to Newport for scrap.

012 was at Landore, but went for scrap in Hereford on 6th October (along with 079)

143's ex GWR

611, 620 & 621 came to Landore for storage on 17/12/20, and will go to Newport for scrap.

Cheers.

Another minor amendment; 142051 headed to Newport Docks for scrap on 22/6/20.

Thanks, I'll add the changes to the next update once we know when the next batch are either scrapped or preserved.

I've added it to the PNG below as withdrawn, since I have no idea where it is at present.

Maybe set to change because plans can offically change with TFW 142’s and it is very likely a few are to enter preservation but it has not been declared yet

but subject to change which will keep close eye on.

Its taken months to get around to updating it, sadly its had to lose its colour coding but this is retained on the PNG files below each list.

No the Swindon and Cricklade Railway annouced they are no longer getting a 143 for preservation because of issues of getting spare parts and that it was too hard in a time like that.

But I did hear from Vale of Berkeley Railway that units 143603 (originally had been intended to go to the Swindon and Cricklade upon withdrawal) now is being preserved by the Sharpness Diesel Group on the Vale of Berkeley Railway with sister 143612.
However 143612 entered preservation but the no1 end is still in Wishaw but the number 2 should follow. 603 has already gone to St Phillips Marsh depot to await delivery to the railway. Watch this space.

Now a unit hasn’t been confirmed yet but one is going to Wensleydale Railway to join up in the Wensleydale Railway Pacer Preservation with units 142028. 035. 041 and 060. And 144020 their. 028 and 060 are not to be run as they’re being used to non rail use. One for accomodation and let out art space. 035 and 041 will likely be running. 035 could get br provincial services two tone blue or 041 the Merseyrail livery as it has Merseyrail condition. 144020 could get its original West Yorkshire crimson and cream livery. Where as the 143 could go regional railway blue or sector liveries the unit isn’t mentioned yet but it could be from GWR or TFW.

and an unidentifed unit roumered 143602 maybe getting saved according to roumers the mystery Railway isn’t revealed yet. So 602’s destination will wait.
Watch this space

142004. 142065 142068 142058 142070 142071 142078 142023 142090 142094 142095 are all in storage at heaton T&R.S.M.D. its believed they are still on lease to may 2021. For staff training purposes. However that might now change due to shortages and covid 19. Also might change further due to toilet having to be locked out due to new rules and not allowed for use off any kind. Hence staff unable to use the toilet during classroom and route learning duties aboard this units meaning unless a tank is specially fitted for this purpose.
Sadly may mean the 142s at heaton T&R.S.M.D may no longer see anymore use. And might sadly go for scrap also.
Unless a last minute miracle or buyer's save them.

Re TfW Class 142 fleet

A number of units have been moved over to Landore this week, to free up space at Canton. The following table shows the move dates:

Screenshot 2021-01-07 205227.jpg

Numbers 010, 072 & 076 were due to come, however, I'm given to understand that there is now a slot available for them to go to Sims Newport next week.

The Landore units will start going to Sims, 3 sets at a time, from the following week. As ever, plans can change so don't shoot the messenger.

Would be nice to see it in original condition. It was one of the Oldham 5 that didn’t gain the FNW luggage rack refurbishment.

Turn back the clock to Wednesday the 11th December 2019. When 142003 came to the rescue after working the 0741 Manchester Piccadilly to Chester. It then stepped up to work the 0903 Chester to Manchester Piccadilly approx 25 minutes late. And solo after 150143 ran out off fuel before departure. In its final days off workings. Prior to Sunday 15th December 2019 going into storage at Barrow. Would be great to see 142003 back. Even on a service off some sort.

I’m assuming the GWR 143s at Landore will also go by road to Newport for disposal?

142074 left Landore for scrapping at Sims Newport today. Won’t be surprised if they dismantle the unit as soon as it’s off the low loader!

TfW 142076 and the other half of 142073 made their one way trip by road from Landore to Sims Newport today. Won’t be long until the TfW 142s are rendered extinct unless one somehow gets spared the excavator treatment!

For those asking about the TfW Class 142's going for scrap: 5 went from Landore to Sims last week and a further 5 units this week. The remaining units will go next week.

These are the dates they went for scrap:

Has there been any further scrap moves from Landore to Newport?

080 (55730 yesterday, 55776 today)
077 (55727 today, 55773 will go first thing tomorrow.

081 scheduled for tomorrow (both cars)
085 Thursday (both cars)

That makes 14 out of 15 units.

142 006 won't be going to Sims ;)
