I think it was about 90 minutes after I completed the error checking that i got the email to ask me to complete the verbal reasoning test.
Thanks for the reply, I've just received the email now. Any advice on the verbal reasoning as I've heard this is the part of the assessment process that's trips people up the most.

Cheers

Hi all. I’ve completed my video interview and waiting to hear back. I was wondering if anyone has any info as to what counts as an acceptable equivalent for GCSE grades A-C?
Think most modern apprenticeships require Functional skills level 2, either before starting or gained during the apprenticeship.

Hi all
Newbie here. Lovely to find so much information and people so enthusiastic about the opportunity like myself.
I’m quit a cool calm person, however this application process has me in bits! I’m through to third online test and can’t focus to start it!
Im falling apart as it something I want so much!

Video interview completed. Not going to give away what was asked, but if you read the job description and what is expected from you on the LNER career page, that will be a good indication of what they are looking for. Stay relaxed, be confident and honest. I felt really good after it and now just wait and see!

Yes, I'm the same. Got offered the three tests in quick succession, then nothing since. My application status in the LNER portal just says "submitted"
Same as me, hopefully hear something by the end of today!

Good luck, atleast you gave it a good shot and didn't come away from it kicking yourself for whatever reason. Hopefully positive news to follow!

Hi all. Some great advice reading through this thread, thank you to all. I've applied for Newcastle on Friday, done the 3 tests and not heard anything yet. Does anyone know if we get hotels for training in york or do we make our own way down daily? Cheers

Just received an invite to a video interview. Not looking for any questions that are asked but wondering what type of interview it is? I’m expecting competency based questions is that right? How many questions are you asked? Thanks in advance.

I have also been offered a video interview. I am 30 and just wondering how old other people are who are doing the vid interview? I'm looking for a career change and wondering if 30 is considered "old" haha. Cheers!

30 is probably at the younger end of the scale!

I've just received a text message inviting me to the video interview. Can someone explain the process? Do questions pop up? Can you record your answers then try again if you don't like it? Is it time restrained? Can you do it on a mobile phone or do you need a webcam and computer?

How on earth do you pass the first test? I have given the most safety driven answers and I cannot pass. I have worked as a health and safety rep and can't understand where I'm going wrong. Could anybody point me on the right direction where to study up and prepare for this kind of assessment? It would be greatly appreciated.
Some of the questions are tricky, for example the one with the lady and her bag asking for help, you should point her to the staff on train and not at the end of the platform because it’s already confirmed she’s booked on that train and getting her on the train to look for staff it means the train won’t be delayed. If you send her at the end of the platform , by the time she gets there with her heavy luggage means probably she will have to run now and maybe cause delays. That’s just an example.

Don’t stress about it, it will be easy. Questions as why do you want to be a train driver , what can you bring to the role, and staff like that and I believe it’s only 5 questions to be answered.

Disagree with the one about the lady with her bag, I am a driver and will always help anyone who needs it, yes getting my train away on time is important but so is delivering excellent customer service. That question states there is no-one close enough to help so you would help her, these people pay our wages by buying tickets and travelling on our services, that to me is equally as important.

Three different people (obviously yourself a qualified train driver already) and 3 different answers...

I directed her to staff at end of platform because A: you need to get the train away on time as there are strict financial penalties and B: She is asking for help and can't carry her bags on the train so that would leave you carrying them on for her (see A) or leaving them on the platform while she gets on the train and searched for a member of staff, who may well be the other end of the train anyway...

Clearly that one is open to very wide interpretation...

I'm presuming you have applied, bare in mind as you go through the process they will ask you customer experience related questions and there is a reason for this. They want drivers to engage and help more with the customers. rather than just say go and see them over there I'm too busy to help. All of the questions they ask are open for interpretation though of course, its their way of getting to see your personality.

So you’re telling me you would make your train late for 600 passengers, to help one person, and for train drivers safety comes first, customer service last. Hmmm not sure still.

That one person is equally as important as everyone else on that train. Yes safety comes first and you would still carry out your cab prep etc you would never rush this. I answered all my interview questions this way and was successful, like I said as this process goes on you will be asked customer service questions - there is a reason for this. My tip is don't forget about the customers, you are still there to help them when you can.

There are 6 questions in total, each asking for a time when you have ........ (insert what they want)
You have 30 seconds to read and prepare your answer, and then upto 3 minutes to answer it, you can use less, but automatically cuts off once you get to 3 minutes. There is a counter which changes colour as the time reduces (some what off putting ) you then have a chance to review your answer and if you are happy you submit it and move on, if not you can have a final second attempt.

Should have added if you read the roles and responsibility’s of the post as advertised, that will give you an idea of the types of questions you will be asked

Hi all,

I have recently applied for an apprentice train driver job and wondered if anyone can give me any pointers.
I have passed the 1st 3 assessments.

2nd Section
Answered 27/50 on the 2nd section, having looked online at this type of test 27 answered correctly should actually be a good score.
3rd Section
Answered all the questions, was worried about time on this one given I had ran out of time on the previous one, so pushed through the questions quicker and hoped that I got enough correct.

Fortunately I passed this section and have now received an email to do a video interview.

Is this interview the last part? Or, if you get through this interview you get a face to face interview?
I'm reading it is likely to be 5-6 questions and I presume this will be "Tell a time when you have...." and "Why do you want to be a Train driver"?, What are the qualities needed to be a Train driver? etc... Is this about right?

Anyone who has started the job, do they ask you for a copy of your GCSE certificate? I did my GCSE's 20+ years ago and have since done A-Levels, University Degree, professional qualifications etc. But I no longer have my GCSE certificate and feel the other qualifications supersede this!

I really would like this job, as I'm sure all on here do so any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you :)
