Two of them (Gibbs and Shastri) played for Glamorgan, and Sobers did it against Glamorgan - or is that too tenuous?

It's not, actually, as it exactly what I was looking for - well done!

The climb to the Pavilion at St Helen's, Swansea is yours.

Continuing the cricketing theme. Here’s an Australia XI picking from the 1980s to the present day. Two openers, three middle order batsmen, an all rounder, a wicketkeeper and four bowlers. But all you have is their nicknames.

22 points up for grabs - tell me their names and (roughly) why they have their nicknames.....

1 Tubby
2 Alfie
3 Punter
4 Pup
5 Afghan
6 Roy
7 Churchy
8 Pistol
9 Oswald
10 Garry
11 Dizzy

3 Punter - Ponting (a gambler)
4 Pup - Michael Clark (the younger brother)
5 Afghan
6 Roy
7 Churchy
8 Pistol -
9 Oswald
10 Garry
11 Dizzy - Gillespie (after the jazz musician)

Is "Dizzy" otherwise better known as Jason Gillespie and so named after the musician?

Correct. Underway with a firm push through midwicket for 2

1 Tubby - Mark Taylor (weight)
2 Alfie
3 Punter - Ponting (a gambler)
4 Pup - Michael Clark (the younger brother)
5 Afghan
6 Roy
7 Churchy
8 Pistol -
9 Oswald
10 Garry
11 Dizzy - Gillespie (after the jazz musician)

2 each for Taylor and Ponting. 1 for Michael Clarke but the reason isn’t right

Think I know a few :

4/ Pup - Michael Clarke - because he was picked for Australia at a very young age 17? and his youthful looks ?

5/ Afghanistan - Mark Waugh - Took Australia along time to pick him after brother Steve, he became known as The Forgotten Waugh.

7/ Churchy - Adam Gilchrist - Last part of Surname I think ?

8/ Pistol - Paul Reiffel - Surname

9/ Oswald - Brett Lee - To do with his height, after a character in Seasame Street ?

Very good. 7 points I think

1 for the reason for Clarke being called Pup (the name had already been got)

2 for Mark Waugh and his fantastic nickname

1 for Gilchrist but the reason isn’t right

2 for Paul Reiffel (who is now an ICC umpire)

1 for Brett Lee, but the reason is wrong

Overall I make that 14 out of 22 points won. We’re left with:

Name and reason for Alfie, Roy and Garry

Reason for Gilchrist being called Churchy and Lee being called Oswald

I have no interest in cricket, but could it be because of Lee (Harvey) Oswald.

Churchy might be because of the ‘christ’ in Gilchrist. Possibly directly or somehow connected with Christchurch.

Some more thoughts (guesses, really):
I don't know who he is, but is the reason for "Alfie" something to do with the "Alien Life Form" character? There's a well know Welsh rugby player with the same nickname, and that's why.
Again, I don't know who he is, but is the reason for "Garry" something to do with the player being likened to Garry Sobers?

One point for why Brett Lee was called Oswald. In one of his first ODIs for Australia his brother was two above him in the batting order, and Ian Harvey one above. Steve Waugh was captain and read out the batting order and said “Lee......Harvey.......” and before he could correct himself “Oswald”. Nothing for Gilchrist though

Neither of those is right I’m afraid.

A clue - in broad terms, the reasons for Alfie, Roy and Garry are similar

'Gilchrist' means 'servant of the Lord'. Does he have family connections with religion?

Not that I’m aware of, and even if he does that’s not anything to do with the reason. It’s hard to give a clue without giving it away though.

I’ll see if anyone else answers by tomorrow morning and if not I’ll reveal all. But collectively people have got 15/22 which is pretty good

I've heard Adam Gilchrist being called "Gilly" ... is that it?

Yeah, he has, and like many sportsmen he’s had more than one nickname over the years. Brett Lee for example was also known as Bing, because there’s a chain of shops in Australia called Bing Lee’s

But there’s a very specific reason for Churchy

2/ Alfie - Justin Langer - was nicknamed after Alan Langer an Australian Rugby league footballer.

6/ Roy - Andrew Symonds - was nicknamed after Baseball star Leroy Loggins as the pair look almost identical.

10/ Gary - Nathon Lyon - got nicknamed Gary after Matthew Wade called him that in error in a match as there is Gary Lyon an AFL
legend and now commentator.

That’s 21 of the 22 points secured.

the answer to the last one - Adam Gilchrist is called Churchy after one of his teammates overheard a young lad say to Gilchrist “hi Eric Gilchurch can I have your autograph please?”

Final scores:
@Mcr Warrior 2
@EbbwJunction1 5
@444045 13
@Gloster 1

So, time for @444045 to take the new ball....

You are correct with 1 & 9 although 1 has already been correctly guessed.
