Six Deltics are still surviving - 55002/9/15/16/19/22. 55019 and 55022 are regularly used on the main line, 55016 is at LSL's Margate museum and 55002 is at the NRM. Not sure about the whereabouts of the others.

I think it’s 55009 which is used on the mainline? 55009, 55015 and 55019 are the three that are owned by the Deltic Preservation Society. 55015 has been completely overhauled over the last many years at their base at Barrow Hill and 55019 seemed to be on the diesel gala circuit the last few years.

As of now only 55019 is the only active one and is at the GCR, also it no longer mainline registered, but will be (Needs a OTMR).
55022 should be operational now and still mainline registered, but I don't have much info about what's going on- could be at Crewe.
55009 is very ill, but will recover. 55016 is seriously ill. 55002 would need a bit of work but nothing drastic. 55015: needs a main generator overhaul on one of their spares (£15k), I think it's own has been donated to no.9.

Aye, 55009 has been used on mainline tours in the last few years (made it to Edinburgh a few times), but is currently out of service with serious faults as @Trackman states.

Ah yes. Was it 55009 that suffered the flashover from the OHLE on a tour then?

The prototype Deltic survives as well, of course, but I'm guessing that doesn't count - there were a number of differences from the production batch, and it was preserved purely cosmetically after a serious engine failure, so won't ever run again.

Aye, on the Auld Reekie tour from Edinburgh on 3rd March 2019. 009 was declared a failure on the southbound run at Berwick-upon-Tweed due to major flashover damage. I can't comment on the source/cause of the flashover as I'm anything but a expert on such matters, though I'm sure others can/will.

Jury is still out on that one.
So far the evidence is it literally went 'bang', main genny and six traction motors plus its cables burnt out, plus it had large burn marks on the roof.
The severity of the damage was akin to a lightning strike, but that seems to have been ruled out and then thought something to do with the OHLE.

I'm amazed six actually survived.
I never chased Deltics, but have on several occasions visited death row at Doncaster to pay my respects.

One of the many railway experiences I wish I had been able to experience! The number of survivors does seem remarkably high compared to other classes!

I drove all 22 of them at one point or another. Great loco.
Wow I did not quite make haulage behind them all even. As you say great loco.

I do have multiple sets of photos of them all in colour print, colour slide, black and white etc. I must post them some day.

Loads on KX, Waverley, York, Finsbury Park depot, Haymarket depot, working - etc

With only 22 locos in the fleet, how did they cover all the ECML diagrams? I guess there were only 3 departures per hour from Kings X in those days? Were most of the trips to W Yorks, Hull, York stoppers etc covered by Cl 47s?

Up the creek
Looking at the good old Table 26 in the 1975 timetable, I think it was basically one Kings Cross-Newcastle/Edinburgh and one Leeds an hour. There were a number of extras in the peaks (morning to/evening from London) then, but the service may have been even thinner when they were introduced. Although they worked some of the night trains, other types (Classes 40 and 47 in the main) were used on the various lesser fill-in duties.

Although never a Deltic basher, I am glad I experienced hearing one start up in Kings Cross and was hauled by one down the racing stretch north of York. Memories that stay.

Many of the Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh workings were 47s.

In 1972 as well as accelerating the existing workings, a further London-Edinburgh service was introduced each way - this service was booked 47 and was pretty much a cert for a duff right up until the HSTs.

From 1972 until 1978 there were only 6 year-round London-Edinburgh services, before 1972 only 5!

Newcastle was pretty much hourly, these extended to Edinburgh approximately two-hourly but the service added in 1972 was squeezed in between two existing services at two-hourly intervals.

Leeds roughly hourly.

but the service may have been even thinner when they were introduced.
It was, even as late as 1970 you had as I said only 5 regular London-Edinburgh services.

I see, cheers for that. :) Like I said, I'm anything but a expert lol

At any rate, no matter the cause of this incident, I look forward to the day she returns to the mainline.

Aye was on that tour. Had the pleasure of Tornado in fine fettle on the way to Edinburgh and then the Deltic just got going on song and then bang. As I said at the time, that's the problem with this heritage traction it's too unreliable. Unlike a modern locomotive like Tornado ;)
