Just looking through Trust at work, and it seems the TPE Newcastle - Edinburghs and vv will call at Widdrington and Cramlington, as well as Reston

Yep, not advertised calls yet. But hopefully will be by the time the timetable starts (with Reston added when it opens).

3 ECML TPE services from Newcastle to Edinburgh and 2 from Edinburgh to Newcastle are on RTT for Dec 21.

Will these run and will they be the only trains to serve Reston? They have WTT stops at Cramlington and Widdrington but not GBTT ones

Is there no way that an hourly Edinburgh to Newcastle 'stopper' could be pathed? This would surely be the best way of serving Reston/Alnmouth etc, even if some stations had to be 1p2h.

Does anyone know if they are in the same slots departing Edinburgh and Newcastle (both ways) compared to Dec 2019?

Lner will also call 1 service in each direction.

Yes, they will run. They won't be the only trains to stop at Reston but they will be the primary service once it opens.

Cramlington and Widdrington will become advertised stops once the required work in the background has been completed.

There's an LNER each way at the moment.

0603 Edinburgh 9N05 TP Newcastle 0604½ WTT
0725½ Newcastle 1S00 GR Edinburgh 0727½ WTT
0809½ Newcastle 9S07 TP Edinburgh 0811 WTT
1018½ Newcastle 9S09 TP Edinburgh 1020 WTT
1311½ Newcastle 9S12 TP Edinburgh 1313 WTT
1447 Edinburgh 9N14 TP Newcastle 1448½ WTT
1718½ Newcastle 9S16 TP Edinburgh 1720 WTT
2138 Aberdeen 1E30 GR Leeds 2140 WTT
2206½ Newcastle 9S21 TP Edinburgh 2208 WTT
Hoping there's more to be added or there will be twice as many Northbound as Southbound.

Depends very much what you mean by a “stopper”. A straightforward all stations stopper between Newcastle and say Berwick is going to be very difficult because it will need to be overtaken by the following LNER service. It would need to be looped somewhere, and the loops are all between stations. I believe Edinburgh to Berwick would be similar, although overtaking is possible at Dunbar, there’s no northbound equivalent.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be all stations. It could call hourly at Morpeth/Alnmouth/Berwick/Reston, plus 1p2h at some of the smaller stations. It would replace the current Newcastle-Morpeth service, freeing up some more space.

If an EMU could be found (Scotrail operated?), maybe it could work?

At the end of the day you're trying to get 4 or 5 125mph trains an hour up a quite long piece of line with few stops. Expecting to be able to fit in a 100mph EMU with more than 4 stops is really a non-starter.

Unless, of course, the loop at somewhere like Belford (which I think should have a station) and then you can add a few more to that figure of 4.

The route (at least within England) is fairly well provided with fully electrified loops, I wonder if they have ever been used much by electric trains. I wonder, if modern standards been in force at the time, they’d have been included…

Is there a reason that ScotRail aren't just extending the Edinburgh to Dunbar semi-fast to Berwick, so that it can serve Reston?

As expected, now been confirmed. 5 services a day in both directions

This seems like a good solution. Perhaps there could be scope to increase the frequency in the future if the demand is there, as presumably the path exists every hour.

So as of Dec 2021 (ish), there will be the following services north of Newcastle:

2x LNER to Edinburgh
1x XC to Edinburgh
+5x daily TPX Newcastle - Edinburgh 'stoppers'
+5x daily East Coast Trains?

Overall, a pretty good balance.

Yes. Nobody wants to pay the rather large expense of providing a driver, guard and unit. For next to no marginal passengers. Even if you got good paths.

Widdrington? For Druridge Bay!
Quite impressive isn't it! When was the last time Edinburgh has a regular service to Cramlington? Even if it's not every train that way that can stop.

East Coast trains won’t be increasing frequency, they won’t have the stock to operate any more than their agreed 5 per day.

Surely with TPE running these trains between Edinburgh and Newcastle there is no need for the Edinburgh to Dunbar services and if the TPE service was hourly then the Northern service between Newcastle and Morpeth isn't needed either?

Late-80s I think off memory, there were two Edinburgh-Newcastle stoppers each way for some time, one extended to/from Carlisle and one early morning down service conveyed sleeping cars into Edinburgh iirc.

In the very early 80s they were common Deltic turns.

This is a marriage of convenience right now. TPE needs to run up to Craigentinny from Newcastle, so why not make it a passenger service and improve local connectivity? In an ideal world it would be regular, at least two hourly.

Should be as per Dec 19 - Hourly both ways

Well, it's the reality of the ECML consultation coming in potentially, but given the anger in the NE and Lincolnshire we'll see how it plays out. I'm with you btw - TPE have the units, make it a regular service.

Why? As I keep saying it's rather expensive to provide an additional three or four driver and conductor diagrams, and there is little to be gained here. There is no meaningful rail market at the moment from Widdrington, Reston or East Linton. The end to end market is more than adequately served. So you'd just be gaining small numbers of marginal passengers from improving the frequency of Dunbar to Edinburgh, Alnmouth and Morpeth to Newcastle, new connections like Cramlington to Edinburgh and the new rail markets at the two villages.

TPE didn't plan to serve most of the stations in Dec 19, it was an Intercity service departing Edinburgh hourly between xx20 and xx35 (as I recall) and calling only at Morpeth with occasional calls at other main stations.

I know. The fact that that's completely unnecessary is a key reason why it's no longer running.

I thought I read that TPE would be withdrawing from Newcastle - Edinburgh. How many fast trains per hour do you need on this section, two, three at the most?
