Thought it ran from centre of Los Angeles to the coast so was trying to guesstimate how big LA was. In the end it was luck rather than knowledge.

Anyway my question is

Name every GB female tennis player to win a title at one of the 4 majors in the open era.

Continuing with the tennis theme, the US Open women's singles (tennis) championship has taken place every year since 1887.

What nationality was the first ever winner of the US Women's Open who was neither American nor British?

Clue: She's the all time winner (most wins) from the amateur era, and later on in her career, became a naturalised American.

Canadian? (Since travel was not too widespread in 1887 or for a few years afterwards - clutching at straws!)

Not sure where I go from Canadian as a 'good guess', so let's plump for Russia. (Sounds a bit like 'Mornington Crescent' :D )

No, although there's been a couple of winners from the Russian Federation (Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2004 and Maria Sharapova in 2006) Russian is not the answer we're looking for.

No, not German. Angelique Kerber won in 2016 and Steffi Graff won five times in the late 1980's / mid 1990's, but that's not the nationality we're after.

A recap on the question...

What nationality was the first ever winner of the US Women's Open who was neither American nor British?
