When I was at primary school as a kid, I read a book called 'The Young Engineer Book of Supertrains', and there was a page about the trains in the future, one of topics was about intercontinental vacuum tube trains that go through the centre of the Earth! This concept is called 'Earthport', set in the year 2081:

As it has suggested in the book, the train carries 600 passengers and 100 cargo containers. The train travels up to 1,200 km/h (745 mph) as it descends downhill towards the centre of the Earth, and speed is generated downhill that it coasts most of the way, with motors used in last few minutes of its journey as it ascends uphill.

But alas, the construction of such infrastructure would have been impossible, because inside planet Earth is not all rock solid. Inside of Earth consists of Mantle, Liquid Outer Core and Solid Inner Core. Secondly, even if the construction is possible, it would take a very long time to build.

The safety of all passengers and crew is anyone's guess, with the train going over 740mph as it descends on a steep hill, through the centre of the Earth and ascend on a steep hill to the surface, as well as any emergency arisen on any part of the journey, particularly in the centre.

How many routes straight through the centre of the world would even make sense / not just end up in an ocean on the other end?

Straight through wasn't the the intended concept. Enter the earth pointing directly at the point you wish to travel to, and have two inclines to emerge at your chosen point. Surely you can travel to and from any point on the planet using this method?

Sorry, but I thought there was already a thread on Crossrail, although a date as early 2081 does actually sound a bit far fetched

The large tube trains that is referred to in that book are the ones that ran on magnetic levitation, and the year 2081 is what the book had mentioned. Crossrail is a very different matter, although they can be referred to as large tube trains

Although they have mentioned "possible", the author is forgetting what's inside the centre of the earth.
A train service to see old nick more like.
