Had a strange one last night, I was waiting for the train to Clacton at Stratford, it arrived as a Peak pulling LMS coaches, I got on and every seat was occupied by a St Bernard dog and they were all drinking coffee and smoking pipes, I went to find the guard to complain, the guard turned out to be a Dalmatian who told me that he was totally fed up with humans complaining.

Have you perhaps been binge-reading the works of Dodie Smith  ?

I bet that was one dog of a journey haha.
Imagine if your journey started at Barking

I keep having regular nightmares about being on the London Underground. I either get trapped in a terrorist attack in a tube station, or I have to witness someone getting run over, or I get lost in the station while being chased. I don’t have a clue why this is.

Yikes! Those really sound terrifying. I’m not sure why they could be though.

It’s crazy, and it’s weird that’s it always the Underground. I love the tube and use it a lot, although haven’t since moving to Cardiff in September. I’ve never had any bad experiences that would cause me to have such regular bad dreams about it.

To be honest, that nightmare sounds like it has great material for the plot of a thriller film.

Just now a true rail enthusiast nightmare.

I was at a station when somehow an APT was coming down the line, but my phone was stuck in my pocket so i couldn't take any pics for this miracle!

I just had one. I dreamt I was exploring the area around Praed Street in London, and I discovered an Underground station I'd never heard of before called "Bollow Hillhouse", served by the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines. I was perplexed as I couldn't find it on the tube map- not even on the one in the station.

The platforms were on quite a sharp turn, and it seemed to be situated in a kind of alley. There were about four or five platforms, all of which were occupied by various trains. There wasn't an Underground train in sight- there was a GWR 158 in one platform, a Southern 377 arriving in another, as well as a 455 and a GWR 800. Despite the activity I was the only passenger there, there didn't even seem to be anyone on the trains. Combined with it being nighttime the dream had a vaguely creepy atmosphere.

Without paying attention to where it was going I boarded a Southern 455. I couldn't see where we were going as it was too dark. The train never seemed to exceed more than around 15mph and navigated a lot of sharp turns. After about ten minutes we arrived at our destination- Brighton. Or at least it looked like Brighton. For some reason in the dream I recognised it as London Victoria.

The train was on a sort of raised bridge coming from beyond the buffers, and we descended and came down on top of the normal platforms. Once we navigated this descent we reversed into the proper platform, the bridge we had descended having seemingly vanished.

In my head I was thinking "wow, I didn't know there was such a quick shortcut from Paddington to Victoria!"

I then proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes trying to figure out how to get through the barriers at Brighton or Victoria or whatever alternate dimension I'd arrived at. There weren't any barriers at Bollow Hillhouse, although I had used contactless payment at a touchpad. There was nowhere to touch out here, just a load of really random machinery, including a vice and a buzz saw. Eventually a platform assistant arrived and he explained I had to take a blank metal ticket about the size of my thumb and grind it into dust using one of the devices. I was gonna explain to him that I didn't have this, until I discovered one had magically appeared in my pocket.

I did as he demonstrated and I was finally allowed out. On the concourse I verified that this was indeed London Victoria (even though it was clearly Brighton), before waking up.

Not literally train-related -- but; one last night, which is having me wondering whether I spend too much time on RailUKforums. I dreamed that I was reading and taking part in -- here on General Discussion -- an earnest and quite heated thread, on the subject of water: not in the context of something which is needed to make steam locomotives go -- just, water in general, in its widest possible relevance.

I regularly dream of trains travelling at a speed which, in the dream, feels uncomfortably fast. They are usually Eurostar- or TGV-type trains, travelling at the normal max speed, but in the dream, the max speed seems potentially dangerous. (I have used Eurostar and TGV multiple times, and in waking life, have never been alarmed by the speed).

Also have dreams of similarly high-speed trains running on roads, rather than railways. Often they alternate between rail and road.

In the 80s I think I dreamt about CIGs and VEPs running on the London Midland region. Ok not that strange I guess, but it was probably due to the aforementioned units being my local traction, together with the fact that I visited LM stations (primarily Stafford) at the time.

I also had a weird one perhaps a month or two back. It was some branch line station - I think a real location, but I've forgotten now - and I was waiting for a train. The train seemed to change type at least twice, I think at one point it was a HAP and another point a loco-hauled service - possibly also a 150, my memory has gone a bit vague - and seemed to be stuck outside the station before it moved off in the wrong direction (away from the station) and miraculously then arrive into the station on the opposite platform moments later.

Surely if it was a heated discussion, it'd soon end up as one about steam? ;)

I've just remembered a recurring current dream - CIGs and VEPs still being in service, alongside the Desiros. Have had this a lot recently.

Perhaps CIGs and VEPs are an allegory for youth (as they were very much the units of my childhood and young adulthood) and it's about wishing to return to my younger days!

Sadly I haven't had any really, really interesting train dreams, such as trains randomly causing trees to fall, trains randomly labelled "For HILSEA" and fighting bears. Those ones really made me laugh! :)

I was in Brussels with several others, for some reason I decided I was going to get a tram alone to somewhere in the Belgian countryside. After stopping at a station on the outskirts that had almost vertical platforms the announcer said it would take another hour and a half to get there so I jumped off at the next station.

I missed the tram back, which seemed to have turned into a bus when it passed, but fortunately it was only a short walk through a railway tunnel to the centre of Brussels. Halfway through the tunnel there was a small room you had to walk through, I knew this was from the war when a bomb had fallen on Wellington Street ...

As far as I can remember, nothing in the dream resembled anywhere in Brussels.

Still can't get my head round the bits I can remember from last night!

My old teacher (whom my dream recognised - for some reason - has a similarity to the teacher in Nativity) was driving a small train down a little branch line which reminded me of NYC Subway. When he got to the end he was also on the run from the police or something, the station turned into a classroom and we all had a rather large argument with the teacher, culminating in the teacher going to the station (now across from the classroom for whatever reason) and taking a train down the line to the other end, but another teacher (who bares a resemblance to the teacher's assistant in Nativity) takes another small train, which promptly turned into one of those NYC buses but LHD for whatever reason, and overtook the main teacher before getting to the station! Also, me and my fellow pupils had somehow already arrived at the destination beforehand, to watch the teacher getting an earful!

Couple lately, i bought a Mark 2 coach and had it craned into the garden, it only just fitted. :D

Last night i dreamt i was in a large shed trying to stop water getting on a model railway layout. Plus i was at a station (323s were serving though didn't look like any Cross City Line station) and because there was no staff around i had to use a very slow lift instead of the stairs.

My dreams kind of suck to be honest.

I was at Manchester Piccadilly station in my dreams a couple of nights ago, I arrived into platform 14 as normal, but I didn't have a ticket and was trying to avoid the ticket inspectors who were on the platform. The strange thing was that there was a bay platform at the west end inbetween what are today platforms 13 & 14 and the ticket inspectors were congregating near the buffer stops of the bay platform. All very strange but I woke up before I had a run-in with them.

Had an incredibly strange one last night...

Spurred on by Earlsfield station's rail replacement bus services last night, I had dreamt that the underlying reason was a massive redevelopment of the station, and as such it would be closed for many months.

Fast forward to its completion, and I was entering Earlsfield station from street level. From the outside, the building looked the same, but gone were the ticket barriers and the airy concourse was replaced by a narrow one way system.

On the winding "entering" path, a counter had been installed blocking the way just before the stairs which you had to squeeze around. At the counter sat a young, blonde lady who greeted every passing customer with a friendly "Hello!"

Up the stairs is where most of the "redevelopment" had taken place, however. The first sight at the top of the stairs was a large sign suspended from the ceiling in Chiltern Railways style which read "Welcome to Cheam".

This foreshadowed what you were thrown out into at the top of the stairs - an identical replica of London Marylebone station, complete with noisy Class 168s at every platform.

On the other side of the faux-Marylebone concourse, a set of escalators led down to the basement, which was a vast expanse of white tiles and bare walls. On the far side was a fairly large Greggs store (complete with seating), and hidden in the corner of the basement was a set of double doors which led out to another identical replica - this time of the current Earlsfield station at platform level...

...except somehow it was in the basement.

Two bits last night:

1) I was on the train home, even though I was looking out of the window and could see the train had branched off onto the wrong line ...

2) I was in the local pub, although one of the rooms was slightly longer and meant I could see into the other room through the door of the room I was in. I went outside and it had moved to one of the villages next to mine, and so I set off on a walk down the nearby old railway lines, though heading away from home.

These lines went by a field, then it was back on the road again, instead of the uphill walk that's there in reality it was a downhill walk. I decided it would be faster to lay down in the road and slide to the bottom of the hill than it would be to walk, so did that. When I came to some traffic lights I got up, and then walked into what was the Park & Ride car park at Nottinghams' The Forest tram stop (complete with tram arriving at the tram stop).

Last night I was dreaming of re-doing my railway layout in my bedroom. I was joining two railway layouts together - one from Train Simulator 2022 and another from Trainz 12. Without the computer!

It was dusk outside my bedroom window, the golden moon was rising behind the hill, and ITV News at Ten with Nina Hossain was on television.

Last night I had one that I went from Blackpool to Dublin across the Irish Sea on a FGW HST, like physically on the water like a boat…
Funny that.
I had a similar dream I was in Scotland and our train boarded a ferry and we crossed a stretch of water in awful weather and the train continued on with its journey after we arrived at an island.
The train was a class 314 but there were no overhead wires.
Also when arriving at our terminal station, all the other trains seemed to be 2 car class 150/1s!

Had one a night before (yesterday morning in fact), I was at a pre-1977 Glasgow Subway look-a-like station, with the two-car 1977 Met-cam stock in orange livery passing through, and there was a man laying drunk on the other side of the tracks. His back was lying on a third-rail, but he was not electrocuted! Then we moved on to an airport somewhere in Argyll & Bute-ish...

Another dream of CIGs and VEPs operating on the Portsmouth Direct in the here and now last night, which seems to be a recurring thing (in this rather trying era, a desire to return to my younger days perhaps?)

Quite a few specifics too. It was the 1020 out of Waterloo, headcode '82', ie fast to Guildford then most stations thereafter (and for most of the 80s and 90s, the '82' did indeed depart around xx20 from Waterloo) with a 4CIG + 4VEP formation, freshly painted in Stagecoach SWT (the early one) livery. Bizarrely I remember the VEP was unit number 3523, which I think really was an SWT unit. I think the location was in the Milford or Witley area but was very vague.

And it was set in the here and now: the idea in the dream was that they occasionally brought out preserved CIGs and VEPs as substitutes on normal scheduled services.

Possibly brought on by looking at the 1996 timetable on timetableworld recently too, as that was the first year of Stagecoach SWT (so such freshly-painted units would be commonplace) and there was indeed an '82' at exactly 1020 that year. Only thing is that the 'real' 82s in this era were mostly CIGs + BEPs (with the buffets closed) but hey-ho, dreams rarely completely reflect reality...

I was on holiday, and on the last day of the holiday I went for a ride on a narrow gauge line that started off out in the country before joining then road down the outside lane of a dual carriageway somewhere on the outskirts of Bristol. Despite my map suggesting their was a proper end station the line just went off the road slightly (crossing the other lane) and stopped at a patch of grass in front of a supermarket that stood where the station was supposed to be. Woke up as I'd been and looked at the shop from the side and was then wondering how to get back to my car at the other end of the line, as the train had gone by the time I got back to the "station"
