Ok, continuing the theme of the a forenamed Deighton novel....

...why were Bomber Command air crews mortally afraid of German Jazz Music?

Or -- was it Germany's equivalent (called IIRC Schraege Musik) of our radar -- less effective; but could, when it worked, give great trouble?

Was that the name of the plane with upward firing cannon?
Yes

Correct name, wrong application. As @DaleCooper has correctly said, "Schreage Musik" was the nickname given by the Germans to the upward firing cannon system fitted to interceptor aircraft.

I'd read of it, clearly; but ages ago, and evidently over time, got wrong end of stick. Apologies, Mr. Cooper !

I'll probably be wrong again about WW2 stuff: but would it be the only one still operational and able to sail to places?

Actually I think AndyPJG has got closer to the answer than me.

So I'll pass the next question to AndyPJG.

Names the three northernmost towns in Scotland, the three westernmost towns in England, the three easternmost towns in Wales, and the three southernmost towns in Northern Ireland.

Cities do not count.

I'll have a shot, if I may -- far from certain of being fully right; but to try and move things on ...

Northernmost, Scotland: Kirkwall, Lerwick, Stromness

Westernmost, England: Penzance, Hugh Town, and -- St. Ives and Marazion both further west than St. Erth: from the map, they look an equal distance "west -- east" -- I'll plump for St. Ives.

Easternmost, Wales: Gwent (Monmouthshire to the Diawl Sais) is nowadays indubitably in Wales, is it not? -- so: Chepstow, Monmouth, and further north, Wrexham (Bangor-on-Dee counts as only a village, I think).

Southernmost, N.I. : Kilkeel, Newtownhamilton, Newcastle

I will give you that - you've got the majority of the answers correct.

Kirkwall, Lewick, Stromness
Hugh Town, St Just, Penzance
Chepstow, Monmouth, Caldicot
Kilkeel, Warrenpoint, Newtownhamilton

Your floor :)

My thanks; but -- hoping to help get things going again -- I did a fair bit of (as it's proved, not altogether effective) looking-up. I don't feel that I rate being next question-setter -- would suggest that it be open floor?

I spend too much time watching the news...!!!

Let's go for a different subject this time, and hopefully a very easy one:

Which television presenter's daughter writes murder thriller novels set in the late 18th century? Bonus points if you can name the central character of the books.
