Rules: must have lost a suffix such as South or Central. A few examples to kick things off:

Carfin, Rosyth, Balmossie and Golf Street all lost ‘Halt’
Yoker, Neilston, Johnstone and Fairlie all lost ‘High’
Crianlarich lost ‘Upper’
Dalmuir lost ‘Park’
Clydebank lost ‘Central’

Not qualified: Ones where another placename was dropped e.g. Clarkston losing “and Stamperland” or Markinch losing “for Glenrothes”.

Over to you.

Huntingdon. Peterborough. Sheffield. Derby. Endless list, surely.

I think Lancaster is just that these days not Lancaster Castle.
Come to think of it, Northampton as well.
Huntingdon. Peterborough. Sheffield. Derby. Endless list, surely.
Isn’t there a relatively recent illuminated sign proclaiming “Derby Midland” there?

Some others:

Nuneaton, Dundee, Dunfermline (lost one suffix and gained a different one years later), Leuchars, IBM (was originally IBM Halt), Wolverhampton, Southampton.

There will be plenty of these, especially in areas which had multiple / duplicate lines pre-Beeching:-

Southport (Chapel Street)
Widnes (North)
Aintree (Sefton Arms)
Bolton (Trinity Street)
Hindley (North)
Atherton (Central)
Walkden (High Level)
Levenshulme (North)
Stockport (Edgeley)
Middlewood (Lower)

Perth was opened as Perth General
Aberdeen was opened as Aberdeen Joint
Blairhill was previously known as Blairhill and Gartsherrie
Don't think Dundee retains the "Tay Bridge" suffix either

Halifax both had its suffix changed, and then lost it.

Halifax Old ==> Halifax Town ==> Halifax

Wellington was at one point Wellington Telford West and has the distinction of both gaining and losing its suffix within 10 years

St Albans City Station lost its 'City' suffix in 1988, possibly due to the loss of Intercity services following electrification. However, we at St Albans South box had erected an original BR (M) "St Albans City" running-in board in 2010. During First Capital Connect's running of the Thameslink services one of their senior staff visited the box, saw the sign and as a result had the nameboards around the station altered back to include the "City" suffix!

Edinburgh Waverley is still in use as the station's official name and is referred to as such by most and still on station signage.

With the exception of a short number of electronic destination boards and on train passenger information systems on non ScotRail and LNER rolling stock, Waverley isn't going anywhere.

Pity no-one told the person who did the sign on the New Station Street entrance...

Castleford used to be Castleford Central until 1969 (Castleford Cutsyke had closed the year before).
Whitby gained and lost 'Town' over the years.
Settle was Settle New for a few years until Settle/Settle Old was renamed Giggleswick.
Dewsbury was Dewsbury Wellington Road, 1924 to 1969.
Sheffield Midland is now just Sheffield (although there is a Sheffield Midland Integrated Station Masterplan, somewhere).

Is James Cook still "University Hospital" at the end?
