What a great way to start the day!
This viaduct makes so much sense! The GCR went on viaducts through Leicester and elsewhere and is a classic image.
It also explains why the engine shed will need to be relocated. To have a single track around the shed and a long section of double track North...
Hi Railfan
The Autumn Steam Gala is Oct 3-6th. There are all the 2024 events listed on the website but you need to click on the banner headline "Whats on 2024" on the homepage. The Mountsorrel branch is open for quite a few weekends this year so may well be open for the gala.
Re that 9F...
Road Rail steam event on the GCR this weekend. Lots of action at Quorn with steam traction engines etc. There are regular guided tours of Loughborough Locomotive shed with Boscastle team Guides throughout Sat and Sunday from 10.30 to 4 pm.
Re the GCR, it is only limited in part by the section to Leicester North. In Gala events they have also operated services to the Mountsorrel Branch, to Swithland Sidings and also just to Rothley. So departures from Loughborough can be as frequent as every ten minutes throughout the day.
Whilst Quorn does have the space, it is also in a rural residential area and so planning permission for any significant structure/industrial use is extremely unlikely.
The land to the North East of Loughborough shed (by the Waste Recycling depot) is apparently heavily contaminated and would...
There is news that the GCR(N) is again rail connected as the track across the new A60 bridge has been laid. Also they hope to begin construction of the next two stages of the "Gap" project later this year. They are halfway through reconnection the GCR to the GCR(N).....and hence to NR.
Meanwhile there is but a little progress around Braybrooke. Nearly all the masts have cantilever arms fitted but there are no catenary or contact wires for around 1/2 mile. The Three Arch Bridge is still in place and providing a photographic point!
It certainly shows the scale of the work. It also shows how small it is in respect of the rest of the countryside around, and this is at its most disruptive.
It may be worth your while to pop along to the GCR(N)Ruddington and ask the Bus people there as they are probably supplying the vehicles?

There was a photo charter using our Windcutter rake and the 9F (just before its with-drawing for 10 year overhaul). One of our team Gavin Thomson...
As was discussed on here in October, it would be a real shame if the MML team gets split up due to a delay in authorisation for the next stages. They have done very well with the Kettering to Wigston works seemingly on time and on budget.
