    Shed Codes

Thankyou, but that wasn't quite what I was after. When the railways were nationalised, they had to renumber the steam locos otherwise there was the potential for many cases of 4 locos having the same number. They got round this by adding 30000 to SR loco numbers, 40000 to LMS loco numbers, etc...

    Mystery problem on brdatabase

I haven't tried Edge yet, but just to let you know, it seems that Clarence Yard has found what was causing the problem. It seems the data I was looking at was not the same data the database owner was looking at (and I dont mean two versions of the database). On this database there is a full list...

    Shed Codes

During BR days, all steam loco sheds had been allocated shed codes. For example, Plaistow was 33A. During the time it was part of the LMS, it was 13A. I dont know what the GWR, SR and LNER did as an equivalent. Was this type of shed code started by the LMS, or were they earlier than that? In...

    Mystery problem on brdatabase

Yes. I didn't know I could get details of each individual shed, so you have taught me something. It looks like I need to get back to the database owner and let him know. Thankyou Clarence. Have a good Christmas

    Mystery problem on brdatabase

One correction was that Plaistow shed was listed as LNER. The original railway should be LTSR, the Grouping railway was LMSR, and the BR part should be Eastern Region (so ER) Clearing cache and cookies for that site - I'm afraid I dont know how to do that. A little guidance would be a great...

    Mystery problem on brdatabase

Every now and then I use brdatabase. I think it is a very good database, and must have taken a lot of work to build it. Now I'm not complaining but twice I have had a mystery problem with it, and I'm wondering if any of this forum's users have ever had the same - and have they found a solution...

Steam Loco Power Classification questions, etc

Yes I knew about the L&BR, but the GER had a 999 year lease so as good as owned it, and both the L&BR and GER disappeared as companies when they were absorbed into the LNER in 1923. Putting the history into words was complicated enough in what I was trying to describe, so I wasn't too bothered...

Steam Loco Power Classification questions, etc

This is just for information, but apparently, back in the days before Nationalisation, the line into London Fenchurch Street station from Gas Factory Junction was owned by the Great Eastern and then the LNER. This line had several weak bridges. However, the main users of that stretch of line...

Steam Loco Power Classification questions, etc

I was at Swanage Railway Station yesterday and saw 34028 Eddystone. I noticed on the cabside, just above the number, it had "7P 5FA". Now, I know what the 7P and 5F refer to, but what does the A mean? On the sublect of Steam Locomotive Power Classification, how do they work out what the P...

    Kings Cross Top Shed

My thanks to both Clarence and Harvester. Have had some success already. A copy (dont know which issue) should be here next week

    Kings Cross Top Shed

Hello Harvester. I would like to get hold of a copy of 'Top Shed' assuming I can find one. Is that the actual title, or is there more to it? A book seller that is not a railway expert may not recognise the name Peter Townend. Does it have what I think they call an ISDN Number? My condolences...

    Kings Cross Top Shed

I'm puzzled. If freight still used steam, what was the point of the steam ban?

    Kings Cross Top Shed

Well thanks very much to everyone. That answered everything I wanted to know.

    Kings Cross Top Shed

A couple of things about Top Shed:- 1.Back in 1963, after steam had been banned south of Grantham(?) some steam still got to Kings Cross Station (needs must, etc). Was Top Shed in a suitable state to service them, or did the locos get sent elsewhere before heading back north? 2. When they...

Elizabeth Line - why is it still in parts?

Well one bit of info I hadn't known about was that the Shenfield trains will only be running to Paddington - or I have I misunderstood? I thought they too would go to Reading. The other thing was that press release from Network Rail. It seems to mix two different subjects into their...
