New edition of the National Rail Conditions of Travel effective 2 April 2024

My perception is that almost no-one uses anything other than: a) a journey planner (in most cases we can be even more specific: Trainline or Google Maps) b) local knowledge of a particular train they often catch I'd assume most people who aren't enthusiasts or travel planners would only resort...

LNER proposal to withdraw Stirling and Glasgow Central direct services: what do you think should happen?

If this would improve XC reliability it can only be a net good for the south west.

What are the precise provisions governing TOCs providing alternative transport due to delays?

The relevant verse and chapter is paragraph 28.2 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel (normally shortened on here to NRCoT 28.2). You're also protected by Article 16 of Regulation 1371/2007 on Rail Passengers’ Rights and Obligations (normally shortened on here to Article 16 of the PRO)...

Is it an offence to buy tickets on a pay as you go basis, rather than all in one, at the start of the journey?

That's my analysis as well (and I don't think the rules require there to be a 'reason' like your plans changing).

Is it an offence to buy tickets on a pay as you go basis, rather than all in one, at the start of the journey?

This seems absurd to me. I get how you arrive at this point from the paraphrase that you must "have a valid ticket for your journey", as you'd need to leave the train to end the journey. To be honest, I fear you'd need to leave the station, or at least pass through the ticket barriers (it's...

Is it an offence to buy tickets on a pay as you go basis, rather than all in one, at the start of the journey?

Rangers and season tickets aside, doesn't the train need to stop at the 'split' point (in this case more like the rebooking point but the same principle applies)

Most people aren't going to study the latest changes to the ticketing regulations before they travel (and nor should they have to).

Summons by TIL on behalf of Chiltern and a lying ticket enforcer

I feel the same, OP's being treated here the same dismal way they were treated by the railway, and it sucks.

Sadly I'm inclined to agree. You'd never convince a court. Assuming the OP is telling the truth (which I think we are bound to do, and which doesn't feel impossible to me), I don't think this is fair, though.

Summons by TIL on behalf of Chiltern and a lying ticket enforcer

I feel OP has been treated appallingly by the railway and appallingly here. The ticket machine was broken: so, in good faith, he asked what to do, did what he was told, and from thereon out he's been treated like a criminal. Am I alone in not finding this implausible? If he was recording...
