The Danish solution is to set a flag on the card at TVMs for inter-regional journeys. The initial charge is 70 DKR (about £8) for local journeys and 600 DKR (about £70) for long distance journeys.

It will be interesting to see if any of the long distance TOCs implement the Contactless Transit Model 3, where touchs in and out are matched to prepurchased tickets.

£55.10 is the new single fare, as LNER are removing most of their return tickets from the 11th June.
A return journey will be £110.20 as against £105.90 currently.
TfL have wanted to decommission the magnetic card reader on gates for a long time.
After they have stopped issuing their own tickets, and at least some gates on each gateline were fitted with barcode readers, they would be able to stop accepting National Rail magnetic tickets.
