Thanks. I note that the Ellesmere Port trains are now six cars instead of Chester. I expect someone has realised they can save one unit diagram doing it that way.

Theres still the ongoing power problems around the Chester area meaning running 6cars down there isn't the wisest idea at the moment!
As an added bonus it also uses 2 less units!

Thanks for the explanation. But it's only one unit fewer, unless I am missing something?

Following the introduction of the current national lockdown, Merseyrail are making slight amendments to its current reduced timetable from Sunday 10th Jan.

The Southport-Hunts Cross line will revert to a 30 min frequency.
The West Kirby and New Brighton lines will have a 45 min frequency on Sundays (allowing for interworking of these two lines).

The reduction in the frequency of the service will likely help with train crew, especially on the Northern line-there have been numerous cancellations over the past few evenings due to crew availability-quite rare to see on Merseyrail.

COVID-19 January Timetable Change (merseyrail.org)
As the government announced this week that the country has been put under national restrictions, Merseyrail will be making changes to its timetables.

Due to resource issues as a result of COVID-19 and the new restrictions, from Sunday 10 January services on the Southport & Hunts Cross lines will return to a 30-minute frequency Monday to Sunday.

Services on the West Kirby and New Brighton lines will be running at a 45-minute frequency on Sundays. These lines will continue to operate every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday with a 15-minute service between Birkenhead North and Liverpool.

The timetable across the rest of the Merseyrail network continues to operate as follows:

  • Ormskirk line – every 30 minutes Monday to Sunday
  • Kirkby line – every 30 minutes Monday to Sunday
  • Chester and Ellesmere Port lines – every 30 minutes Monday to Sunday (15-minute service between Hooton and Liverpool)
Full timetable information is available below.

Merseyrail now running every twenty minutes except to Ellesmere Port. From https://www.merseyrail.org/plan-you...e=emailCampaign&utm_content=&utm_medium=email:

Due to an increase in staff availability, as the number of new COVID-19 cases continue to fall nationally, we will be able to increase services across our network from Sunday 14 March.

Trains will run every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday until 19:30 across the network with the exception of the Ellesmere Port line which will continue to operate a 30-minute service all day.

After 19:30 a 30-minute service will run across the network. There will also be a 30-minute service in operation on Sundays.

I wonder if they will stick with 20 minute services ongoing. It's not a huge inconvenience to wait an extra 5 minutes and have 3 TPH rather than 4, especially as the new trains will apparently have greater capacity. Maybe stick with 4 TPH at the peaks and reduce off peaks to 3.

Someone will now come along and tell me why that is completely unviable!
