Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Cricket's coming back to terrestrial tv. About time too.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...rights-for-england-test-cricket-tour-of-india

Channel 4 have won the rights to show England’s series in India in a groundbreaking deal that means Test cricket will return to terrestrial television in the UK for the first time since the 2005 Ashes.

The Guardian understands that global rights holders Star Sports and Channel 4 have agreed a contract for the live broadcast of the entire tour – four Tests, five Twenty20s and three one-day internationals – with an announcement due soon before the first Test in Chennai on Friday.

It's allegedly 99% in the bag but I won't truly believe until we see an actual C4 press release. Fingers crossed that'll be later today.
I had an email from NowTV (ie Sky) apologising for advertising the India and England test series as they don't have the rights to it.

best get it signed asap - test starts on Friday morning!

Still no official confirmation on the C4 cricket coverage which is frustrating!

Obviously excellent news to have a series on free to air (Sky money might have helped the game massively in the short/medium term but without the "shop window" in the long term it could be very damaging) but did it have to be a series where I'm fairly sure we're going to get battered? One day stuff we might do better to be fair but the Tests...

Perfect timing for C4 with people stuck at home, either not working, "working from home" or educating children!

Today's lesson, batting against the new ball :D

The Channel 4 schedule has updated on their website. Coverage is 3.45am to 11.30am.
The third test is a Day/Night game starting at 9am GMT, so more kind on the timings than the other three games.

Blue sky outside, sun streaming in, cup of tea in hand, cricket on the TV, and England going OK so far - the joys of retirement!

Just a pity about Lawrence's duck, but I think he'll have plenty of better times to come. First test in India is bound to be quite a learning curve.

Great to watch test cricket on terrestrial TV again - the first since 2005, I think, and a fine start by Joe Root. As this is a railway forum, anyone watching today will have seen the elevated railway or metro passing the ground in Chennai, with a station serving it and another nearby. One of the commentators referred to it as the monorail. I've never been to India but looked on line and I see that there are several systems - Chennai Suburban Railway, MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit) and Metro. Monorail looks like a long-term proposal not yet in operation. Anyone know more?

It's the MRTS, Chepauk station is the one next to the stadium.

Whilst the coverage was a bit more basic than what you get with Sky, it certainly was nice to see it on a normal channel. Apparently it's the first time ever a complete England overseas series has been (or is being) shown on terrestrial TV. So hopefully good viewing number will encourage further bids in the future.

Basic coverage does me fine. Fed up with the overload of stats and endless replays. I thought the commentary was nicely understated.

I listened to most of the radio commentary on Talk Sport 2, and thought that it was quite good.

Mark Nicholas seemed to be the main commentator, although there were one or two others whose names I didn't catch; they were quite good. The "experts" were Darren Gough and Steve Harmison, with comments from an Indian former player whose name I can't remember. Darren and Steve were both okay, but not, I think, as good as those who are on TMS. They didn't seem to have a scorer / statistician "miked up", which I missed, being a scorer myself, although someone seems to have been feeding them stats on times.

I'll be doing the same tomorrow, but this time I'll not be working, so I'll be able to have the television on at times as well!

Radio commentary on the bedside radio until the tea interval (which coincides nicely with breakfast) then TV for the last session. Very enjoyable.

Joe Root is now third highest England run scorer in tests, having overtaken Alec Stewart. In second place is Graham Gooch, 433 runs ahead, so potentially within range in this tour.

Joe has the best test average since Ken Barrington over fifty years ago.
