Hi,

We have switch crossing which has a failed weld on the first weld which is about 2,000m from the point, and based on the manufacturer's drawing, the distance of the point of crossing nose to the first weld is about 2,000 mm.
Is it allowed to have a re-weld 600mm towards the point? The distance of point crossing nose to the first welded joint will become 1,400mm only. Is it still good?

Do we have a standard reference stating the minimum distance requirements for welding in switch crossings?
Hopefully, you can help me.

Thanks.

Judging by the post you do not maintain track.
You have not stated what location the weld is within the layout or at the crossing and surely your first port of call would be the RAM team if you cannot work out the standard for yourself?
2m from a nose to a weld isn’t a big crossing either.

The poster has their location as 'Philippines' so they may not have access to NR's RAM (route asset manager) team.

Maybe not but there must be some sort of structure in place to support front line staff if they are struggling with a standard, plus an answer here would usually be based on UK infrastructure.

Would Track Gauge have any effect on the answer?
Shouldn’t do - poor gauge will affect things like the crossing nose and other critical areas in S&C like flange back contact at the heel of a switch but weld position shouldn’t be affected. Also depends on bearer type.

Did Ploughman mean narrow vs standard vs broad gauge? The smaller the gauge, the shorter any point end needs to be.
