Hi guys, I have a medical assessment soon.

I know I won't fail it, however I am just wondering does anyone know if your allowed to drink alcohol and what will happen if some shows up even at low amounts?

Say I am off for 2 days and then have a suprise test the day I go back, it would show up but would they fire you for drinking on your days off with your friends?

Thanks in advance

As Gem gem has said. I never drink the day before I'm due in work. Not worth the risk. You may think you're clear but you could have an incident, not necessarily your fault and get medi-screened,any if you're over their very low limit it'll be the most expensive pint you've ever drunk.

When you last drank is irrelevant (unless it's during work hours), you will only be sacked if you are over the limit.

Are you a new entrant to the railway for a medical? If so once you pass this medical and on induction it will be absoutely hammered into you what the drink & drugs allowances and tolerances are.

There is a max limit (and its much lower than the drink drive limit) and if you are over it then regardless of the reason, you'll be heading straight for a gross misconduct hearing. Zero tolerance.

100% not worth touching any alcohol before a medical. You have to ask the question is drink you want more important than your future career?

yeah alcohol is best avoided within 48 hours of all these things. I found my medical interesting though recently, i had a similar thought, the assessment was in the afternoon, that lunch i had been at a business lunch, where its not uncommon to have a glass of wine with and on this occasion due to celebratory i seemed a little odd not having one... I didn't obviously because why make problems, but, why shouldn't i had... your allowed to drink when not doing a safety critical role, why should it matter if i had a slight amount of alcohol in my system at the medical, I'm not driving trains that day and its not illegal.

But anyway, obviously it would be foolhardy to have had a glass that day, hence why i didn't. Another interesting point, my blood pressure as what i would describe as sky high, high for me anyway, almost 150, and i thought oh dear, yet she said thats nice and low???? lol told me cut off is nearer 180. and to think i had spent the two weeks before running and stuffing my face with blueberries.

eyesight, had a check up before hand on my own to see if i needed glasses, my optician told me my eyes were perfect... eye test at the medical was a near disaster, borderline pass. dont know what happened there, perhaps my optician was a bit of a cowboy, i did notice, the letter screen in the opticians was much closer whereas the letter screen in the medical was more than double the distance away. Don't know what to make of that, one says i probably need glasses and the other says i have the eyes of a hawk.

everything else was fairly routine, urine test, i mistakenly thought she was going to watch me give the sample as she was in the loo with me so started getting ready which led to a somewhat funny misunderstanding. doesn't make sense to me that she doesn't watch tbh, i could have had a vial of a friends urine there if i was so inclined.

oh and i am borderline obese apparently if you were to look at me you would think i have to run around the shower to get wet I'm that skinny. so either i have body dysmorphism, or, a disproportionate amount of muscle or some chart reading error occurred.

I have my medical tomorrow. I’m so worried!! I should have been on a course but had a baby in March luckily they kept position open for me. I’m starting my training end of September (if I pass medical tomorrow) worried about my eye sight. I’m short sighted but I’m told we can wear glasses for the eye test? Also hearing.. I can hear but I’ve heard people only realising they had a hearing problem when they came to do the medical.. anyone know if they strike you off completely or they retest? Thanks

Your leaving it a bit late to ask for advice on an internet forum. What time is your medical?

On one of my medicals I failed to industry standards on my eyesight, all they did was send me to the opticians for retest and to get glasses which met the standard, you’ll be fine don’t worry.

I'm also short sighted. As long as your glasses correct your vision enough to see the letters on the wall you'll be fine.

Hearing test is nothing to worry about. I know of people who have passed that by clicking at random intervals, and still passing.

It wasn’t advice I was looking for. I was asking a question whether or not they let you correct your eye sight/hearing.. please re read my post. At any stage I asked if my eye sight and hearing isn’t good enough then I’d have failed whether I asked 2 years ago or a minute beforehand. Thanks for your helpful response though

Not strictly true. Your corrective lenses mustn’t exceed -8.0 in either eye to pass the medical, irrespective of how well you can see with glasses on.
