Hi guys,

I've been accepted by the railway as a customer ambassador. Do they check GCSE's?

I made a mistake on my application and it is way too late to change it and I'm scared if I tell them they will think I lied. Is it common for them to check your GCSE certificates?

Thanks in advance

What's the nature of the misrepresentation?

Incorrect grades quoted?

Claiming to have taken / passed subjects when this wasn"t actually the case?

Fake GCSE certificate? :?:

Put it this way...I took my GCSEs in 1990, and I've never been asked to prove them for any job I've ever applied for.

. It was never stated that they require gcses for the job luckily but I'm worried they will now think I mislead them which if I was them it would look like I have

Never applied for a trainee train driver position then ???

There is a chance they may ask for a copy to be put on file so I would be honest with them and tell them of the mistake. It might stand you in good stead for your future career as they will see you are an honest individual who admits to their mistakes no matter how minor they may be.

I have never been asked for any gcses but the point is I don't want to lie too them but then I don't want to loose a lifetime career if I don't tell them

I put incorrect grades in math and English. I put D instead of E for English and D instead of F for maths. It was never stated that they require gcses for the job luckily but I'm worried they will now think I mislead them which if I was them it would look like I have

Try.not to worry. A D compared to an E isn’t a big deal. Maybe if you’d said A A A A A A. And you had E F E F E E. you’ll be fine

Thank you, I will send an email to them

Lol, not like u put a instead of e. I'd probably leave it. None of my railway jobs have asked me for GCSE except gtr but that's because it's an apprenticeship.

The likelihood of them checking will also depend on your current highest qualification. If you already possess a good undergraduate degree it is highly unlikely they will ask to see evidence of GSCE grades. If you only have A-level results they might. If your GCSE grades are your highest qualification the probability is higher still - chances are at least one of your referees would be someone from your school and it is anyone's guess what the reference request might ask for.

The problem with anecdotal evidence from others is that it only takes one exception and your chances this time round can be over, plus potentially being on the recruiter's black list for future opportunities too. Lying is never a good thing to be found out about when competition is fierce. Why leave it to chance? (FWIW my current employer did check my qualification by asking me to bring a copy of the degree certificate when I started.)

If I were you I would come clean. Whatever the reason you put down incorrect grades why would you run the risk of them finding out? There are plenty of opportunities on the railway so even if you were not successful by admitting to the mistake this time, you wouldn't really want to scupper your future employability with said company should they find out you lied. In any case, like some others have said, a D and an E hardly makes any difference so they may well acknowledge it and not bat an eyelid.

Yes, they may never find out, but that is a decision only you can make.

I have no qualifications higher than GCSE, and have had four jobs with three different TOCs. At no point has anybody asks for any proof of them.

I took mine a decade later and have never ever been asked what my grades were for any job role I've either applied for or been appointed to in any of the multiple industries I've worked in.

When I applied to be a trainee driver in 2015 I wasn’t asked to prove my qualifications.

Each case is different though and honesty is key on the railway.

When I left school in 1996, I was given a small sheet of paper no bigger than a drinks coaster that listed my exam grades (which weren't anything to boast about).

That piece of paper has long since been lost or destroyed, although I had kept other more formal A4 sized certificates I have gained over the years.

I believe in honesty & integrity when you are completing job application forms - I always declare my correct G.C.S.E. grades. However, because it is 25 years since I left school and I have no tangable record of my results to refer to, I have to go off memory and I have probably made the error myself in saying I got a 'C' when it was in fact a 'D'.

If worst came to the worst and it did later come to light, that you had put an incorrect grade on your application form, you can easily argue it was an honest mistake which many of us can make if you left school X number of years ago.

There's a difference though between making a mistake with what one of your G.C.S.E. grades were, to blatantly lying on the application form and saying you have got eight A* grades when you know you only got D and E grades.

Many prospective employers don't check G.C.S.E. qualifications. My old high school closed in 2001 and was subsequently demolished, so the employer cannot even contact the school.

I am assuming that my G.C.S.E. results will be kept on record by the Education Authority in some dark storeroom somewhere, but I haven't the foggiest knowledge of where you or employers can check historic school examination results.

From my own experience of job hunting - employers very rarely check G.C.S.E. results. If you are applying for a specialist post where you need a specific qualification, then you need to be 100% honest as they will probably want evidence of this prior to offering any contract of employment.

For a Trainee Driver position, my TOC will now specifically check your GCSE grades. This is because you will be enrolled into an apprentiship. There are other threads on this forum where people have also stated that their GCSE results were checked and copy certificates requested.

But if you don’t have the evidence for this purpose, it means you have to complete the functional skills part of the course in its entirety. Therefore gaining the evidence you were missing to start with.

I was never asked. Then again it's a good few years ago now. They weren't as bothered then.

They (or you) would need to contact the relevant exam board, who hold the historic records of predecessor organisations.

Correct.

The apprentiship is still relativley new and anyone applying should try and dig their certificates out.

Threads :

It also crops up during some TOC specifc recruitment threads too.

This is an interesting one for me, I have proof of all my GCSE grades, AS levels, but not my 3 A levels. I started my first job in my final week of 6th form and had to take the day off work for my final exam. Fast forward a few months to results day and I was working a full day shift and couldn't make it to collect my results.

I popped into the school a week later to collect them only to be told they had no idea where they were, but they could login to the computer and tell me what grades i got so I could write them down. 3 Cs, easy to remember. I was told certificates would be posted home when they arrived at the school from the exam board, but I still havnt received them to this day.

I can remember the subjects, I can remember the grades (being 3 x C) but cannot for the life of me remember who the exam board was for each subject! I still put them on my CV, but to date I've never been asked for evidence for any job (non railway) I've ever had. I was asked to bring a copy of my proof of results to a recent interview with a FOC, but again they didn't actually ask for them on the day.

Your school should be able to advise who you sat each subject with. Failing that, you can write to all the exam boards and ask them to check their records - in theory, one of them should be able to find something!

When I applied for the LNER Trainee Driver last year roles I was asked if I had my GCSE certificates, was told they were needed because it's an apprenticeship. I said yes. Turned out I didn't, i just had a summary statement, which wouldn't have been accepted.

So I scrambled to get copies of the certificates sent out to me.

Got on the phone to my old secondary school to ask what the exam boards were for English and Maths, then submitted an online request with the boards for copies. Not the cheapest thing, but ultimately needed if I want to get into the train driver role with any TOC doing an apprenticeship.

If only i kept ahold of my NRA folder - I should have known it would have proved useful...

Presumably they don’t insist on that for people who have degrees etc. (degree courses you generally need a minimum of 5 A to C GCSEs in any case)? It would seem a bit stupid otherwise.

I don't even know who the examination board was for G.C.S.E.s in 1996. Are they likely to be the same organisation in 2021?

Here's a good place to start when looking into getting replacement certificates. It also has links on who to contact if your old exam board no longer exists.
