Lol, how many classifications do the 319s need?

They've already got:
  • 319
  • 769
  • 799
  • 768
  • 326
Gotta confess 326 and 768 are new variants of 319s for me. If anyone can fill me in with unit & carriage numbers, and where they might be found, that'd be really handy, thanks

Back in the real world, I was looking at Roger Ford's latest 'New Train TIN Watch' this morning and there is actually a fleet even less reliable than TfW's class 769s and that is the Crossrail units (I think it was the full-length 9-car units rather than the reduced length 7-car sets).

They still theoretically have the capability to run in pure electric mode - it's just that the pantograph is not fitted, presumably as it would be a maintenance liability.
Similarly, there are 387s that don't have a pantograph, but we don't call them 487s or 587s.
Which 387s are you referring to? Whilst not having inspected every unit recently, every unit was delivered with a pan and shoe gear and there is no reason for them to be removed. Could you be thinking of 377s instead?

are the 769s proving more reliable?
This last week or so the 769s have behaved themselves.

Had a trip on 769008 today from Ystrad Mynach and it didn't seem to sluggish accelerating pretty much how I remember them on the dc network.

I think some drivers being gentler on them than others. 769002 is still inside the shed at canton depot being fixed

makes me wonder if my mum took one today from Caerphilly i do want to catch one soon to see what they are like

I'm seeing a fair few 769's out on weekdays now. Does anyone know if they are also routinely running on Saturdays?

2D13 1307 Penarth to Bargoed today spent the time from 1407 until 1733 at Llanbradach and put the Rhymney Valley line above Caerphilly on stop due to the total failure of 769452 (Surprise ??). Actual fault not known. In the end, Thunderbird 37418 was scrambled from Rhymney to haul it to Rhymney at 5 mph.

I hope that Porterbrook aren't expecting rent for them. There were only two out today before the failure. There's been a failure every day this week.

Once TfW have accepted each 769 into service, they've been paying leasing charges on them. I think TfW might have even had to start paying leasing charges once they accepted the 769s to have them out for crew training.
If we lived in a BR-era simply structured railway, where DMUs could be moved around freely, there's no doubt the 769s would've been gone by now, with something else brought in instead, like some more 153s from the glut that are being retired at the moment. But we don't. And the 153s being retired by TOCs in England are not PRM compliant. So the 769s will have to limp on until the Stadler Flirts start to arrive.

Time will tell. I'd be inclined to bin them and split the remaining four cars to two and run everything with 150s. The 769s can't even keep to 150 schedules. The current schedules are slacker with, at least, one minute dwells everywhere. A round trip from Penarth to Bargoed used to be two hours. Now it's two and a half hours.

i could tolerate dwell time its reliability im concerned for

That's fair enough but if a round trip takes longer then you need more units (and crew) to provide the same service frequency.
true but i do come from the customer point of view of id rather a train every 30 mins than no train for 4 hours

It's rescue by 37418 was certainly somewhat of a surprise, not least because someone had to take an angle grinder out onto 418s coupling hook to fit the rescue adapter. Oops.
