    German-speaking rail enthusiasts

Thanks for the recommendations. (For what it's worth Discord doesn't mean anything specific - it's just the brand name of a particular piece of communications software which is quite popular with large communities.)

    German-speaking rail enthusiasts

Does anyone know of any good online German-speaking rail communities? I do enjoy participating in this kind of thing so if forums like this exist that's great - I do also like Discord servers (I prefer to avoid Facebook though). I'm asking because I think it would be a nice way to improve my...

Were they over-ordering the bakery products as well then?

    Northern Unit Refurbishments

All 323s are 3 car. You are correct that they have kept their original seats, though the layout has changed to accommodate the PRM toilet, to allow more airline seats, and to fit seats where the luggage racks were on the units that were originally built specifically to serve the Airport. If...

    Your favourite-sounding loco(s)/multiple units(s)?

I find there's something quite ominous about the continuous humming. I hated it when they first came in, but it's grown on me.

    Your favourite-sounding loco(s)/multiple units(s)?

I liked the hustle alarms on most BR-era stock. Pity they've basically all been replaced now. The exception is the Mk4s, whose hustle buzzers sound like they are struggling to breathe! (though I'm not sure if that's a retrofit or not) The current combination of "Beep-boop Beep-boop Beep-boop...

    Voyagers at University

I imagine if you'd looked on RTT half an hour later you'd see they had made up that time as soon as they got onto a section where they could 'stretch their legs', so to speak.

    Voyagers at University

Was on one of these Voyagers in a 170 path from Birmingham to Gloucester today. The dwells were longer than the 170 would have been but it didn't seem too much an issue for the timetable as - despite the calls at UNI and WOP that a Voyager wouldn't ordinarily do - we arrived Cheltenham several...

    Sorry, wasn't paying attention!

    GWR SERVICES. UNAVAILABILITY OF TOILETS.

Yes, they do. It's a good design in theory, but would be better IMO if the doors didn't automatically shut in the way they do as it has the side effect of making them undesirably heavy to open. It also can be difficult to tell from the outside whether the door is locked or not - there's a little...

    Station announcements too long

They are triggered by GPS location, but the system will know what service it's on and should therefore, in my opinion, be capable of automatically adjusting them accordingly

    Class 707 to Southeastern Dates

Albeit in completely the wrong colour scheme!

    Northern Unit Refurbishments

Which is exactly the point. If more time had been available then they could have waited for the door controls to be ordered, produced and delivered before sending the first ones for refurb. I don't believe that they actually "forgot" to order the parts. Surely they must have some kind of...

"Computer [or other bureaucracy] says no"

I had an interesting experience in Greggs the other day when I ordered a decaffeinated latte. The member of staff apologised that they were not allowed to make decaff lattes, but could make me a caffeinated latte or a decaff americano! I didn't probe further, but this sounds an awful lot to me...

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

It does commit the (in my opinion) cardinal sin of blocking the windows with livery/advertising though. (I'm assuming however that those windows are the ones that would be obstructed by the bicycle racks anyway)

Human element - manual vs automated announcements on trains.

"It must be working" in reference to TrainFX is possibly the furthest statement from the truth I've heard all day

    Northern Unit Refurbishments

It very much was rushed - as mentioned before the first few units left Wolverton with the old lighting and door controls simply because there wasn't time for them to arrive

    Delay Repay claims rejected

Is there actually any requirement to use the online forms, or are TOCs required to process claims sent to their address? If I was delayed, and wrote a letter to the TOC in question enclosing my tickets, providing the relevant details, and requesting compensation in accordance with their delay...

    Avanti West Coast: Standard Premium

Would be nice if when the Pendos were being loco-hauled the sandwich prices changed to 57 pence! (Not that they're hauled in regular service any more, of course)

    Station announcements too long

Avanti do a lot of this. Particularly amusing is having an emotionless synthetic voice try to assure me that the food from the buffet is "delicious" - something just doesn't fit!
