    I just looked at Sabah State railway and it does still seem to be operating, with plans to extend as you say and even in the future across the boarder to the Indonesian part of Borneo.

    Sorry, I got confused, the one I travelled on was in Sabah, a bit further along, I was getting my Malay States confused. The Sabah one was very good though, not sure if any of it still runs, there was a passenger service from near Kota Kinabalu to Tenom and Beaufort and also a steam tourist...

    I do like the German ICE Trains, I find them quite spacious and comfy even in 2nd class.

    I was given vouchers last year regarding a cancelled return trip on the New Amsterdam service and asked afterwards for a cash refund which I received quite quickly. I suggest that you do apply to them.

    I did see a single carriage moving on it's own once in Brig - Switzerland, with no pant or diesel, some one told me that some trains had batteries to move short distances, I suppose it was shunting itself.

    They do that in the UK too in Kent on the Kings Ferry Bridge, linking the Isle of Sheppey with England. (The centre part of the bridge can be raised to let shipping go underneath, not sure how often that happens now?)
