Back to the bad old days’: swingeing rail cuts set alarm bells ringing

Yes, I did that last time I made the journey earlier in the year. Travelling on my own account and not being particularly pressed for time I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort and speed of the 350s and not particularly bothered by the connection to/from Northern services at Crewe. I would...

Back to the bad old days’: swingeing rail cuts set alarm bells ringing

Looking at prices for a return trip next weekend with my sons to visit my elderly father and bring him down to stay for a few days before Christmas. Avanti = £188, car = £55, door-to-door journey time comparable at around 4 hours (London outer suburbs to Manchester outer suburbs). Train is...

Is there a threat to the present continuing usage of the UK landline phone system?

Annex 2 starting on page 13 of the following document from Ofcom has an explanation of the technology behind the various types of telephone network https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0021/216084/wftmr-statement-annexes-1-26.pdf Figure A2.4 on p.17 shows that under current FTTC...

Is there a threat to the present continuing usage of the UK landline phone system?

Indeed it is! A few years ago the National Infrastructure Commission thought that it could be done by 2033 at a stretch. BoJo declared that was "ludicrously unambitious" (Daily Telegraph article in summer 2019), and when he became PM the timetable was accelerated to 2025. However, as reality...

Do Cadent Gas have a right to enter my flat to check pipes, in a non-emergency?

If your flat is leasehold then I would expect there will be a wayleave or easement previously agreed with the landlord

Amazon announces they will not accept UK-issued Visa credit cards from January 2022

Agree it's bad form for emails like that to ask you to click links to update your account. It would have been better to say 'please login to your account to update your details'

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

For the benefit of less technical readers, DMARC stops scammers from using an official email address (such as hmrc.gov.uk) but it doesn't prevent them using a bogus lookalike that might catch out the unwary (such as online-tax-return-hmrc-uk.com)

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

I had this email too. I had a look at the mail header and it passed the anti-spoofing checks (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMARC) so would appear to be genuine spf = sender policy framework: checks that an email purporting to come from a domain was authorised by that domain dkim = domain...

Branding and marketing blunders or failures on the railway.

I believe that was deliberate though. There was a contemporary booklet from the BR Board explaining the messaging was to acknowledge things weren't ideal but there were signs of improvement

Branding and marketing blunders or failures on the railway.

This was covered in a BBC documentary a few years ago - can't remember the title unfortunately - apparently BR wanted Terry Wogan instead but research did show that the other person was more popular so that's who they went with. I also remember a BR poster with Gary Glitter (a 1970s glam rock...

Why is giving way to buses not a legal requirement?

I live in suburban London, am a bus user myself and if driving and see a bus indicating ahead of me to pull out of a bus stop, I will always let it go in front. If you are going to codify something in law there needs to be a means of enforcement and here you rub up against the more general...

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

I note this phrase in the BBC report referred to above Which is presumably the same upgrade that we have been discussing in this thread below? https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/is-there-a-threat-to-the-present-continuing-usage-of-the-uk-landline-phone-system.221225/

    Your experience of Jury Service

As a previous foreman of the jury I would say it's essential for the sake of justice to ensure that the verdict it is based on a fair and thorough assessment of the facts and evidence of the case presented. That said, in both trials I have been called for, the charge has been been attempted...

    Your experience of Jury Service

We had a good jury on that trial - a variety of people with different life experiences and perspectives to bring to bear on the case in hand. And for longer trials a camaraderie does build up. I don't claim that will always be the case, but my personal experience of jury service is that it can...

    Your experience of Jury Service

Completely agree. I was saying this as a good feature of the system. I think where people engage thoughtfully the system works well. That said, my experience has been at the more serious end on the scale of criminality

Possible end to paper tickets in South East?

That is true and I find the TfL autocomplete feature is pretty accurate* even though most of my travel is exclusively on Southeastern rather than TfL-operated services *I always tap in and out but interesting to check their prediction whilst I'm en route!

    Your experience of Jury Service

Having done jury service a couple of times (both trials had the charge of attempted murder) and acting as foreman second time round I was keen to go round the table, explore the basis on why people came to the view they did, and ensure we were collectively comfortable with the position before...
