    EMR Overcrowding

Well the good news is that EMR have reinstated the hourly service between Nottingham/Sheffield and Liverpool. The bad news is that, if the last two days are anything to go by, they've reduced the number of coaches on most services from 4 to 2! Considering that even the 4 coach trains are often...

    December 2022 Timetable Changes

The reinstatement of the three SO Sheffield to Cleethorpes via Brigg services would also be welcome.

    Tfw Regular Cancellation and Bustitution

What a ridiculous idea! You'll be suggesting next that the railway should be run for the benefit of passengers instead of staff! ;)

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

But if you have a paper ticket you don't need to leave your mobile phone switched on! Just another reason why paper tickets are easier to use and more convenient than e-tickets. And whilst yes, you can do other things with a mobile phone, its primary function is to make and receive phone calls...

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

I disagree: normal people do not leave a gadget switched on when they're not using it. Why would you leave your mobile phone switched on if you don't wish to be disturbed? I do however accept that I'm not what you might call a "normal" person but then most people on this forum would probably...

Preferred ticket format poll (paper ticket vs smartphone app etc.)

The difference is that I know who exactly who has access to my paper ticket, ie me and it would be my own stupid fault if I lost it or had it stolen. You don't know who has access to your e-ticket and the card details you used to pay for it.

Preferred ticket format poll (paper ticket vs smartphone app etc.)

Any data you choose to put online, whether it be e-tickets, card details or photos can potentially be accessed and stolen by hackers.

Preferred ticket format poll (paper ticket vs smartphone app etc.)

Of course the results of this poll will be slightly skewed by the fact it's taking place online and you have to have some degree of tech knowledge to log on and vote. If you held a similar poll on the high street the majority in favour of paper tickets over e-tickets would be even larger!

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

With the exemption of the speaking clock I do all those things! Ultimately it's far more satisfying to interact with other people in the real world rather than spend every waking minute staring at a phone screen!

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

Yet even a stack of 12 credit card sized tickets will easily fit in your wallet whereas a sheet of A4 paper with a set of incomprehensible barcodes won't!

    May 2022 Timetable Changes

It may have already been asked on this thread but do any TOCs do a simple "What's changing" guide for the new timetables to save me having to download each one and compare it with the current timetable?

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

That's not necessarily true, is it? TOCs are obviously employing "nudge theory" tactics as it's in their interests to phase out paper tickets and then use that as justification to remove TVMs and close down booking offices. For example if you book on LNER's website, e-tickets are presented as...

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

It works both ways though, doesn't it? Some people are so obsessed with technology and "progress" that they don't stop and question whether it makes their lives better or who it benefits (clue - it's the company not its customers!). It seems these days if you don't do absolutely everything on...

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

A sensible one who wants to relax on the train and doesn't like being disturbed unnecessarily. Do you keep the oven on at home all the time on the off chance you might feel hungry? ;)

    Are e-tickets the way forward?

Not yet but that's clearly the long term plan, in the same way as that when the banks introduced online banking a few years ago it wasn't to make life easier for its customer it was so that eventually they could save costs and increase profits by mass closure of branches and associated...

Great Ticket Sale courtesy of Grant Shapps

I booked all my rail sale tickets on LNER who do offer the option of collecting conventional paper tickets. You just have to remember to click on the rather bizarre "Don't have a printer or smartphone?" message and it offers the option to collect or have tickets posted out to you.

What three things would you fix or change about the railway?

Nationalise the railways. Reopen all the scenic branch lines Beeching closed. Bring back steam.

Great Ticket Sale courtesy of Grant Shapps

I had the same problem earlier today. Collected tickets from a Northern TVM at Leeds and they had "TEST. DO NOT USE" printed on them. Later I collected several more tickets from a LNER TVM at Wakefield Westgate and they didn't have the "TEST. DO NOT USE" text on them

Great Ticket Sale courtesy of Grant Shapps

Like many TOCs it looks like they're only offering £1.50 fares in one direction, meaing that you have to buy a full priced advance single for your return journey. Nonetheless a day trip from Sheffield to Scarborough for £14 is pretty good value...
