    Bizarre prices from Birmingham

Difference between the walk up fare of £809 for two people, and an advance fare valid only on the direct CrossCountry train. The connection from University doesn't have first class, although that shouldn't necessarily cause an issue.

    GWR fleet procurement

Is transferring some of Chiltern 165s to GWR really on the agenda?

London travel advice (with Disabled Railcards)

While I suspect it doesn't matter in this instance, Fridays are off-peak until the end of May for pay as you go, but not for paper tickets such as travelcards. https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/free-and-discounted-travel/off-peak-friday-fares They don't. They just see that your card isn't blocked...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Plenty of other businesses happy to repair or refurbish any sort of train, not just the manufacturers.

MML Thameslink to London via Abbey Line

Trying to work out what the use case is for that ticket, with a change from railway to underground not before Zone 4 and ultimate destination in Zone 6. I think going to Elm Park, Hornchurch or Upminster Bridge changing at Barking and avoiding central London is the only obvious one.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

This 11 car thing really needs to be put out of mind until such time as someone has a load of money available to deal with the sidings. Clearly there is provision in central London at the cost of work to revise the platform doors, but the rest of the plan doesn't seem very affordable.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

If Derby misses out on contracts to build other rolling stock, which go abroad to be built, how do you manage direct award of consolation contracts? Is that even a valid concept under procurement rules?

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

It appears to need to start and end at Wimbledon Park which somewhat restricts which diagram it can work on.

How could the Elizabeth line expand?

Not if it comes with trains carrying fresh air from Shenfield to Southend. It would be interesting to know what volume of passengers travel direct from Shenfield on the Elizabeth Line into London rather than taking considerably faster trains run by Greater Anglia. In other considerations, what...

    Connex Brighton Express class319/2 interior

Video here of the buffet area. While the picture below is the interior from a 508, it demonstrates the moquette Connex used in 319214-319220 and 508201-508212. https://www.flickr.com/photos/r879hrf/34174461686 There is a Mark 1 on the Severn Valley Railway with the moquette used by Connex in...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Soon is the key word, not now, and another gap behind. If Derby had won the Nexus 555 contract being built by Stadler, the DLR B23 contract being built by CAF or the Piccadilly Line contract being built by Siemens, the conversations about bringing forward orders wouldn't be arising. Derby may...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

The Rail Minister took an urgent question on the matter in Parliament today. Two key points made among others were that any award to Derby needs to be legally watertight in the context of there being four manufacturers with plant in the UK, and that trains are built for a life of 35 to 40 years.

Is the Heathrow Express a viable, worthwhile service?

Just gate the mainline platforms separately from the relief line ones, although it does seem that it isn't really the market HEx would want to be serving if they are predominantly there for passengers getting into a taxi from Paddington.

    Epping Ongar Railway

How much longer is GBRF’s Contract with Belmond

It was extended in 2021 for a further five years. Assuming that GBRf continue to deliver on the contract, and charge an acceptable rate, they would be expected to continue on to a further contract...

Alternative Destinations for MML Trains in London

If people could wait in locations distributed along the length of the train, rather than all at one end, those problems might not exist, but for that to work, you really need a concourse above or below the platforms, and not all of the interchange facilities in one location.
