Avanti - Trainee Train Drivers - Multiple Locations (28/02/23)

Honestly it is frightening how easy it is to have an incident as a Driver (not just as a new Driver either). There are a multitude of ways to mess up and it is always (rightfully) dealt with robustly.

    ASLEF strikes 5th-8th April weekend

Care to enlighten us as to these ‘archaic working practices’?

    "I'm a Signalman, not a Signaller!"

Agreed. It’s the intent behind it, not the wording itself. If people are deliberately being belligerent/trying to cause offence, that in itself is what causes the offence.

    Nerves about new role

The fact that you’re posting this demonstrates you have a good attitude towards the job already. Work hard, put the effort in and ask if you’re unsure, you’ll be fine. The vast majority of Trainees/Drivers that have issues have a bad attitude towards the job. Best of luck!

    Wrong Direction Movements TW7

In the example Step3 Star has given you should be proceeding at caution. If the wrong direction board was X50, you should be proceeding at caution up to 50mph between the board and the crossing. In reality, if it was an X50 board, you’d be unlikely to actually be travelling at 50mph as that...

    Sounding the horn……??

I think it’s in some TOCs driving policies

    Steam train stoker

Wasn’t a relief Driver someone who had passed the MP12 Drivers course and had to work 100 turns as a Driver before being ‘made up’ to the grade? In between those 100 turns they would continue to be utilised as a Secondman?

    Weaver Junction accident c. 1975

If it’s struggling to get away, it’ll more than likely struggle to stop. I’d hardly say that’s a ‘bad mistake’. I’d rather be at the controls of a train struggling to accelerate due to wheelslip than at the controls of a train unexpectedly struggling to stop due to wheel slide.

    Storm Henk travel disruption 02/01/24

Exactly this, tree related debris scattered around the railway can create poor railhead conditions. As can a sprinkling of fine rain after a long sunny spell. It’s not just confined to the autumn period, it’s not the leaves themselves but the contamination that causes the issues.

    Northern Ad hoc cancellations

As will some railway staff. And I guarantee that many of your colleagues would decline the offer. Every workplace in every industry is staffed with individuals, each with individual needs/wants.

If you see something dangerous on a line, who to call?

Yes it is, which is why I stopped

If you see something dangerous on a line, who to call?

I have once stopped approaching a station on a curve in darkness when someone was waving a phone light/torch from an overbridge as I approached. When I spoke to them they were just using it to wave at me for me to blow the horn. No issue really, better to be safe than sorry.

    HST cab protection

I’ll wager a bet that had yesterdays incident happened in darkness rendering the Driver unable to take evasive action within the cab, they wouldn’t be here now.

    Kirknewton Level Crossing Question.

Yes but how quickly do you think a train will reach the crossing after having passed the red signal at any sort of speed?

    Kirknewton Level Crossing Question.

To mitigate against human error. TPWS is not guaranteed or designed to prevent a signal being passed at danger, it’s there to mitigate the risk.

    Patchway Junction

No. For starters, within the same area, going through Sydney Gardens on the Up Main you can receive double flashing yellow/single flashing yellow as you approach Bathampton Junction. The junction signal can then display either feather four (Down Main towards Chippenham) or feather five (Up...

    Patchway Junction

I’m 99% sure that with the sequence you’re describing, BL1536 can display a feather 4 (for Down Tunnel to take you towards Bristol Parkway) or a feather 5 (for Down Bristol to take you towards Filton Abbey Wood).

Aslef strikes and OT ban called…

Rest Day Working is outside of the normal rostering parameters. Agreed rosters will usually have agreed limits which differ from company to company (eg, maximum of six working days in a row, minimum of 14 hours between shifts, maximum of a ten hour working day). If a Driver chooses to work...
