    Mystery Key

    Maybe.

    Mystery Key

The assumption from the Tracks Through Grantham team is Highdyke, South of Grantham. This may / may not be correct. A retired signaller friend has confirmed that, if it is Highdyke nr Grantham, then all the points were worked from the frame.

    Football

We've had a similar situation at Grantham Town. Last year we had problems with chafer grubs in the pitch. The crows started pecking the pitch to get at them and consequently rendered the pitch unplayable. A number of fixtures had to be postponed or rearranged. The pitch forms part of the council...

    Mystery Key

Apologies. I didn't think to measure it, but I believe it's approximately 15cm long. The item turned up at a carboot sale in Bedfordshire last year.

    Mystery Key

I was asked about the mystery key (as shown in the photos). It is marked Highdyke Box, on.one side, and the number 3 on the other. Discussing with railway colleagues, both retired and present has not yielded any answers as to what it was used for. It isn't a door key. I post this to a wider...

    Cricket

There has been some debate regarding the trial use of a Kookaburra ball in the second round of county matches. The theory has been to help players prepare for Ashes tours to Australia. No it could be argued that the ball, which reportedly doesn't swing or seam as much as a Dukes ball may not be...

    Cricket

Nottinghamshire 80 all out chasing 335 to beat Essex. Bloody embarrassing!

    Cricket

Welcome back to proper cricket. That said a number of County games have suffered due to the weather. Only play in 3 out of 9 matches so far today. What irks me is having a delayed start, getting play underway but then still taking lunch at the booked time. You can't spoil tradition.

Dangerous Goods Train Derailment At West Ealing 05/04/24

It still won't stop non-rail staff making a mountain etc... Okay, there's been an incident and the signalling system has done what it should. There is a well planned procedure in place when any incident takes place. Having dealt with a couple of Dangerous Goods Incidents before, the...

People buying houses with associated noise (churches, railways etc) and then complaining about the noise?

I grew up living not far off the A1, so you learnt not to be bothered by any traffic noise. I'm now living about a quarter of a mile from the East Coast Main Line, and working on the railway don't think of trains as noise nuisance. I've also lived a few hundred yards from the Parish Church...

    Rail replacement aeroplane?

Seems like someone was thinking. https://twitter.com/LNER/status/1774708455460188167?t=6GcDAgS28qCFdnRS2YDLGA&s=19 Picture shows a social media posting by LNER regarding their new air service.

Probably not so far from the truth for many of the UK population.

    ASLEF strikes 5th-8th April weekend

Indeed. A number of operators run no service on ASLEF strike days. Image shows screenshot from West Midlands Trains about strike day train services. Other operators are similar or run a severely reduced service.

    ASLEF strikes 5th-8th April weekend

Nope. The Welsh and Scottish politicians seemed to resolve industrial disputes a lot easier. So, why can't the same happen in England?

    EMR Class 170 updates

To go off topic: That partly reminds me of the transfer of HST power cars to Scotland. I remarked one day to a friend "welcome to Scotland's brand new 40-year old trains." The refurbishment of the 170’s at EMR is needed, and possibly other classes of the fleet. The short-term plan was to get...
