Trivia: Biggest date gap between openings of two stations with a direct service

But if Ben Houchen get Re-elected, there every chance he will build a new station at Teesside Park. But, having said that, once Darlington station is re-developed, there may not be a direct link.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

As I understand it, people’s front doors are currently 8-10 above the railhead, so any wiring would be at an unacceptable height from a safety point of view. With the station moving 300 meters, I was wondering if there was scope to lower the trackbed enough to put a cut and cover tunnel through...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Interesting question, just out of curiosity, how far could the track be safely lowered? And would it assist in electrifying the full section through Moseley?

    Redcar Central to be "revived"

Unfortunately we are in the murky area of politics where a Conservative Mayor is attempting to do things in a predominantly Labour controlled area. The same thing happened in the TDC’s time, I saw first hand some of the things that happened during the TDC’s time, some of it suspect, but more...

The "Durham Coast Fliers" - Popular? No stop Hartlepool?

I see Grand Central had a unit out last night running ECS, doing Sunderland-Thornaby - Darlington -Thornaby-Sunderland. As part of its journey it spent a while in platform 3 at Hartlepool. I assume it is part of the Commissioning process? Can’t be long before platform 3 comes into full time use...

    Teesside Airport New Station

It will be interesting to see where the station will be, I’ve seen it mentioned, that the Houchen’s aim is to move the terminal nearer to the present station location, if, and it’s a big IF, the station remains in its present location, that to me would suggest that the long term aim is to move...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I think you’re right, it looks like an early “potential“ benefit diagram, which has seen subsequent changes since first published. It would be interesting to see an newer version.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Has the planned (above) profile changed. I thought the speed on the new alignment was going to be 110mph, I’m sure Don Coffey said it was going to be 110mph on one of his in-cab video. edit:- Just rechecked, and he does suggest that the new fast lines from Huddersfield to (near) Dewsbury will...

    New Teesside Park station?

In order to understand what is going on, you need to understand the politics of the area. Teesside Park was created by the Teesside Development Corporation (TDC), a Conservative organisation in the late 80’s, Local Labour councils at time refused to work with the TDC to such an extent that the...

HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct construction updates

I assume your referring to the bridge sections that are stored on the completed viaduct, in preparation, for installation of the next section.

08/11/23 East Coast Landslip between Darlington and Newcastle.

That’s one thing that puzzles me. Each day there is an early morning ECS movement from Heaton to Middlesbrough and back again (late afternoon) via the Durham coast, why don’t they alternate between the Durham coast & Stillington routes, thus retaining route knowledge of both routes?

Leamside Line should open to enable an express Northern service for the area

In an idea world, having Leamside open with both Tursdale jct and Ferryhill South jct grade separated would open a whole new world of possibilities.

South Stockton/Thornaby Station, date it was built?

Thornaby Station, In it’s present location, was built in 1882 and opened as South Stockton before changing it’s name to Thornaby-on-Tees in 1892, when the town received it’s “Town Charter“. I seam to remember seeing a map (many years ago) that seamed to suggest there was a South Stockton Station...

Stations that don't contain the name of a settlement, particularly termini

Yet, curiously, this map from 1855 indicates that the same location was called Yarm Station? https://maps.nls.uk/view/102341779

Stations that don't contain the name of a settlement, particularly termini

There isn’t a settlement called Allens West. Strangely, when I used the station regularly in the mid 70’s to visit friends I thought, it was called Allen’s West, but maybe I’m just mis-remembering.
