Conservative North Yorkshire mayoral candidate leaflet - dubious rail pledges?

The North Yorkshire mayor has a challenging task. The geography spread is huge compared to other areas with a relatively low population. They won’t be able to promise many rail improvements as they mostly link into other areas that will have other priorities. I’m surprised that the area hasn’t...

    How could Lumo expand/develop/improve?

I think what some are insinuating is that Lumo is watching the air market carefully to understand where potential passengers could be sourced from. If Lumo see that flights in a certain arrival slot are coming in at a premium, they might look at options to fulfil that perceived demand. The...

Reopening Gisburn station as a parkway for West Craven and extending Clitheroe services there

It’s an option. Question is, what else could you do with the money? I am going to say £25m for the station and £3m per annum for the additional train. I expect there to be signalling and infrastructure requirements but they depend on the interface between existing movements and the new demands...

Passenger numbers heading into spring ‘24

I would be interested to know how different routes are reacting dependent on the impact of strike action and engineering works on the service. We have zero trains on strike days and I think we’re stable-ish with a small increase in numbers based on my limited experience.

How much electrification would be need for Transpennine services to be pure electric ?

A highly pedantic person would remove ~1 mile from the Hazel Grove-Cleethorpes mileage because of Doncaster.

    Another idea for Bradford!

There’s lots of questions for railways in Bradford that need to be considered What new railways are going to be built? What is the plan for Leeds-Pudsey-Bradford Interchange? Is it a fast connection, the service we have now or an intense rapid transit railway.

    Wortley Curve West Yorkshire

What is the ownership model of Railway Paths? I would like to understand if the current model would be better shifted under Network Rail.

Fire at Saltburn cliff lift (15/01/2024)

I like it but without the lift, quite a slog back into town.

Fire at Saltburn cliff lift (15/01/2024)

It’s a hundred yards from the car park at the bottom of the hill and the esplanade is wide enough for a fire engine to access it. The alternative route is steps or a very steep road that is infamous for Arriva buses tackling it really well in icy conditions whilst cars slide round.

20 mph Zones - Extend or Eliminate?

I have no problem with 20mph zones. In my area there is this weak argument that strategic roads should be 30mph but during the day, you can barely achieve 20mph due to congestion anyway

Bradford Forster Square 4th Platform Funding Announced: what improvements would you like to see made?

Depends on cost and the number of advanced tickets made available? Forster Square is not convenient for the majority of options for the last few miles of your journey compared to Bradford Interchange (current bus station closure notwithstanding) I think the risk is you get into the peak and...

    How could Lumo expand/develop/improve?

Extension to Glasgow is one possible expansion opportunity, potentially utilising an agreement with Scotrail to carry passengers for a token fee. I don’t know where the Metrocentre would be on this but a Newcastle unit could use shoulder time to start there or even Heworth. Completely off the...

    2024 Fare Revision

Quick Question - when will we find out the details of specific fare increases/changes linked to this increase.

How should Moses Gate, Farnworth, Kearsley and Clifton be served once Wigan to Bolton electrification is complete?

I assume the 323s are not fitted with selective door opening and that the timetable probably won’t offer a better service. It does seem an interesting choice to operate shorter diesel trains on an electrified line and have them having to drag themselves from standing starts at 3-4 stations, the...

June 2024 reopening of the line between Clitheroe and Hellifield for passenger trains

The costs of upgrading Hellifield won’t be modest compared to paying for a faster bus between Skipton and Clitheroe. The layout at Skipton is also quite limiting particularly once you have got a stone train and other services heading north in the mix.

Northumberland Line to be re-opened to passengers

I know but only because I worked at a satellite site in the north east. Keeping in topic and with a hat on that I hope the north fully understands, I’d say get on with it. It’s harder to stop trains once they’re running even if they’re not stopping everywhere than it is to start running them...

    Does Britain embrace ignorance?

I think it was worst in previous decades. There was a cult of admiring the amateur and I think we’ve realised that we need to invest and work on things to do well or we fail to do well. People avoiding technology are being squeezed and one of the contributors at the moment is 2 factor...

Class 66 if the 08 electric conversion works well.

How would you overcome the Bollo Lane Crossings in the West London Orbital?

I don’t know this area so take what I am about to say with a pinch of salt. I would recommend following the District line on the southern side but it might need Gunnersbury Triangle grubbing out. Close both crossings. Will need a tunnel under the District line behind Acton works. Will screw up...

    Reopening the Ventnor Tunnel

Temporary inconvenience/diversionary routes/back ups don’t build up a great business case. My impression is that revised parking restrictions may be just as effective to keep traffic moving
