    Penalty fare issues

Is a ticket valid if it's purchased after the passenger has commenced travel?

Accused of reusing a open return ticket

They're also available offline, so if you have data issues, the ticket will still work.

Being charged under byelaw 18.2 by merseyrail

Presumably only if within the time limit for laying new charges - don't many rail related offences have a 6 month period during which charges must be laid?

    Connectivity Challenges with Digital Railcard

You're making a common mistake and assuming rail companies want to deliver a good customer experience - as can be seen from many posts on here, not many of them are, unfortunately.

    Connectivity Challenges with Digital Railcard

When I need to renew my Network Railcard (usually the day before I'm planning to go somewhere on the train and realise it's expired!), I can do it immediately online. The other option would be to either:- 1. Apply online and wait a week for it to arrive. 2. Go to a manned station and renew it...

    Stansted Airport fines

How do you tell those who've made an honest mistake from those taking advantage of the confusion to travel without paying full fare? 1707259541 I've never tried it, but wonder if it's possible to use contactless to get through the barriers for the Liverpool St to Norwich trains (as they stop at...

    Stansted Airport fines

What about London Luton Airport then - would people expect to use contactless to get there? 1707257812 Not sure what Greater Anglia could do differently? They've got signage at Liverpool Street and their website very clearly says contactless isn't accepted. They want it to be available, but...

    Stansted Airport fines

Although neither are visible on the virtual tour of Liverpool street - https://virtualtour.greateranglia.co.uk/liverpool/ . Can't see for sure when that was taken, but it's since August 2022 as that's when the Greggs opened .. There is a big yellow sign which every passenger would walk past to...

Fined by Merseyrail as I had “come too far” without a ticket. Should I fight it?

I'd wait for the experts to arrive, but reading their byelaws, I can' see how a prosecution for breaching 18.2 could succeed. 18.3 says "No person shall be in breach of Byelaw 18.1 or 18.2 if: (i) there were no facilities in working order for the issue or validation of any ticket at the time...

Accused of avoiding 15 fares on trains

I don't see the harm in requesting it after the settlement has been paid and the case closed. Would be interesting to see what they based their claim on.

    Stansted Airport fines

Technically yes, because you didn't have a valid ticket when you boarded the train. You'd need to buy one from Tottenham Hale, tap out there, then get back on, to be legitimate..

Accused of avoiding 15 fares on trains

Is it worth putting in a Subject Access Request to them to get a copy of the information they've been using? Some may be withheld/redacted, but I doubt they could refuse to release all of it.

14yo Daughters Fine, no ticket, no way to pay...

Northern's website says promise to pay is only available at unstaffed stations. Presumably if this ticket office was supposed to be open, it's not an unstaffed station...

Ticket retailer refusing to refund unused ticket after passenger decides not to travel due to disruption

Spirit of the rules means nothing though - we've seen countless cases on here where the ToC applies the exact wording, whether it makes sense to or not.

Ticket retailer refusing to refund unused ticket after passenger decides not to travel due to disruption

The OP didn't abandon their plans - they had an advance ticket for a specific train, which didn't run on time, so wanted to refund that and travel on a later train. I've had similar disruptions which caused me to change plans (but had an anytime or off peak ticket, so could just get the later...

    Connectivity Challenges with Digital Railcard

Yep, was the 1 month tourist version. A refreshing change to use compared to a Network Railcard (no silly time restrictions or minimum fares!) I don't think I've ever had my digital railcard scanned - it's been checked a couple of times, but not with a reader.

    Connectivity Challenges with Digital Railcard

My last 3 Network Railcard renewals were all done on the day of travel (in one case, while eating a bacon roll in the station cafe, after having bought my ticket!), so I'd have failed ticket checks each time, if it required the data on each device. Not that the railcard has been checked for...

Summons by TIL on behalf of Chiltern and a lying ticket enforcer

The maps are a mess - Stratford has a key, but also uses completely different symbols for TVMs and doesn't show any Oyster validators at all. https://images.nationalrail.co.uk/e8xgegruud3g/39vHBksgkh5fOjT4VAxTCS/810e82b97f5c945f56ea9239e90ad830/Stratford__London__station_map.JPG

Summons by TIL on behalf of Chiltern and a lying ticket enforcer

No, those icons on the map don't necessarily mean they're Oyster validators. Here's a map of Manningtree station (my local) with the same icon just inside the lobby. Given that Manningtree is 1 hour from Liverpool street and well outside the Oyster zone, they can't be Oyster validators. It's...

Summons by TIL on behalf of Chiltern and a lying ticket enforcer

The TOC/TIL are suggesting that only written permission to travel is acceptable? Not that has any legal standing?
