Heysham Harbour: Passenger Closure and Reopening Dates

This thread prompted me to throw this one out for discussion. Everything I’ve seen indicates that services were withdrawn in 1975 and reinstated in 1987. A couple of pictures have popped up on Railcar showing scheduled services operating between those dates, the liveries supporting that...

What engineering work does electrification entail?

Quoting @najaB from the Levenmouth thread: “And, for completeness, the problem isn't that the UK network is old, but that it has a very restrictive structures guage. Almost any electrification project requires rebuilding bridges, reboring tunnels and/or altering buildings. That's the expensive...

    Redouble Aberdeen-Keith Junction?

Don’t know if this has been discussed before - in recent years, this line has been redoubled from Dyce-Inverurie. Insch-Kennethmont remained double when the remainder was singled in 1968 (?) - is there an argument for going back to the position then?

    Amtrak train hits water tanker

    25/6.25 kV electrification removed

As we’re having a discussion on third rail, what OHL has been removed? Here’s a few starters: Dalreoch-Balloch Central - singled (equipment reused on Lanark branch) Craigendoran-Helensburgh Central - singled High Street-Bridgeton Central - line closed Balloch Central-Balloch Pier - line closed...

Gas point heaters - do they still exist in the UK?

Just saw a recent video from Chicago of gas heaters. Are there still any in the UK?

Met-Camm “Lightweight” DMUs: Could (or should) they have been converted to 101s?

These early units were withdrawn after 10-15 years - the only difference from the later 101s appears to be the control system (yellow diamond rather than blue square). Could they have been converted fairly easily?

Annan: Why did the box stay?

I thought we had covered this some time back, but I can’t find any reference to it. When Annan-Gretna Junction was redoubled, a new panel went into Dumfries box to control both that section and the existing Dumfries area (I think Dumfries South may have closed at the same time). However, Annan...

Trivia: Single lines that were doubled (NOT “redoubled”) since 1960

Asking this one in the context of Busby-East Kilbride, which was announced as being double-tracked in conjunction with electrification and subsequently dropped. I can’t think of an instance where a never-double line has been doubled in my lifetime - can anyone come up with an example?

    Kilmarnock-Barassie reopens August 1st

NR have advised that they expect to reopen the line this coming Monday following repairs to subsidence. The issue appears to have been an old culvert which nobody knew was there. Further investigations will take place to establish where it comes from and goes to.

Trivia: Stations (and lines) used well after official closure

Following on from the “Excursions from closed stations“ thread, any examples? I’ll start with a few: North Devon line hurriedly reopened shortly after closure due to disruption via Exeter Wadsley Bridge station remained in use for many years after closure for football specials to Hillsborough...

Trivia: Railway Infrastructure (e.g. buildings) that was built but never used

In a similar vein to the thread on lines, here are three examples to get things rolling: 1) Maryhill Park Junction signal box in Glasgow was destroyed by fire. A new box was built and design for the signalling was completed. The decision was then taken to close the Inner/Outer Circle lines to...

Why did Nottingham-Rugby hang on as the last passenger service on the GC?

As the title says, this has been a bit of a mystery to me. I haven't been able to find any explanation online, so why was this "rump" of a service retained after everything else had closed?

Trivia: Stations that lost their suffix

Rules: must have lost a suffix such as South or Central. A few examples to kick things off: Carfin, Rosyth, Balmossie and Golf Street all lost ‘Halt’ Yoker, Neilston, Johnstone and Fairlie all lost ‘High’ Crianlarich lost ‘Upper’ Dalmuir lost ‘Park’ Clydebank lost ‘Central’ Not qualified...

Aberdeen - Inverness line: could further improvements be made?

Getting away from airports for a moment: would there be any case for redoubling Inverurie-Insch and Kennethmont-Keith i.e. back to the late 1960s track situation?

Trivia: Railway infrastructure/buildings that were never used for their intended purpose (if at all)

Inspired by the thread on platforms that were built but never used, I'll get the ball rolling with a few: 1) The replacement Maryhill Park Junction Signal Box. The original burnt down in the early 80s (the circumstances are a whole other story), and the relevant design was completed, including...

Trivia: Stations close to each other that you can’t travel to/from easily

Following on from the “non-obvious termination points”, something popped into my head about this. Rules of the game: Stations must have had a regular service between them at some time Stations must have a passenger-standard railway connecting them I’ll nominate Uddingston and Newton: about...

    Perth(shire) Locals?

Just noticed that the excellent Railcar site has recently added a 1965 picture of a seemingly well-patronised DMU at Ballinluig. I believe that back then, a "local" service ran from Perth to Blair Atholl. Would there be any demand for such a service nowadays?

Trivia: Stations used by passengers after closure to scheduled services

Someone mentioned on another thread a station which was closed but still used by excursions organised by an outside party. With that in mind, I’ll get the ball rolling with Ashton Gate - used some 20 years after closure for specials to a Billy Graham appearance Wadsley Bridge - used for...

Trivia: Longest possible journey entirely on 25kV without reversing?

Talk on another thread about getting from Manchester to King's Cross got me thinking about this. I think you'd be hard pushed to beat this one: Euston-Northampton-Birmingham-Stoke-Manchester-Preston-Motherwell-Coatbridge-Gartcosh-Cowlairs-Carmuirs-Edinburgh-King's Cross.
