    DOO now coming to Sweden

That would depend on precisely what has been agreed. That a train is capable of DOO does not mean that it will be operated as such. Let’s face it, virtually every train built since the 1980s has been capable of DOO operation. … yet. ;)

    DOO now coming to Sweden

Strictly, no. However, I believe the point @Tetchytyke is making is that by removing guards you remove the mandatory requirement for there to be a second person onboard. DOO as per the Southern or Strathclyde models does not have to be run with a second person because their role is not integral...

    International Women's Day - 8/3/23

Bit surprised that no-one else has mentioned this yet, so let me be the first to acknowledge that today is International Women's Day and raise a cheer for all the wonderful ladies who do stalwart work for us all on the railways. It is perhaps appropriate to give a tip of the hat to Karen...

    GSM-R Question

Those of us who use this system know about the DSD alarm and what triggers it, but I am unsure whether or not the DSD alarm also sounds if the vigilance is not acknowledged. I normally drive with the DSD held down solely by weight (my leg, not my bag before some wag suggest otherwise) and...

    DOO now coming to Sweden

Perhaps. I’m not so sure that it’s an issue that is front and centre in the minds of passengers, though.

    DOO now coming to Sweden

Well, trap and drag incidents on DOO services do not affect RMT members.

    DOO now coming to Sweden

Lots of things don’t make the press but are still problems, and that applies to all areas of life. It’s the press that decide what’s newsworthy.

Why UK opt to close train doors before advertised departure time rather than on time/after as the rest of the world

The vast majority of rail users do not struggle with this, though. They’ve seen what time the train leaves and they get there in enough time to make sure they’re on it. I get that some people miss trains due to delay and late running, etc, and that some are less well motivated than others...

    DOO now coming to Sweden

OK, well it can just as easily be done the other way around. Have you got the stats to show that trap and drag is not more of a risk for DOO services? As I understand it, there has only been one for a guard dispatched service (TPE: Newcastle).

    DOO now coming to Sweden

The inability to produce stats on demand does not mean that a statement is untrue. If you look back through discussions on this forum, trap and drag incidents that get discussed are primarily relating to DOO services. Yes rail is overall a safe method of transport, but trap and drag is a...

AWC stored 221s off to Cross Country

But the owners don't get revenue from running the trains but from leasing them. They care not one jot if the train gets used as long as they get their leasing costs. Therefore, offering them for free would mean that they get no income from them, and I can't see that catching on any time soon.

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

The government doesn’t care about profitability, or even about reducing losses. It’s only about reducing costs, and doing so regardless of the impact that it might have. This can be traced at least as far back as McNulty. As things stand, it is extremely unlikely that any of the suggestions...

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

Government is not interested in growing the industry.

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

Throughout the various IA threads we’ve been told that we need to make changes in order to cut costs. Well, welcome to the reality that this approach results in. Withdrawal of the HST fleet will realise savings over and above those incurred simply by their operation.

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

How many saved shifts would be needed to recoup the cost of expanding Central Rivers to cope with these longer formations? Fact of the matter is that Voyagers are not going to be lengthened. However much it might make sense, it would require a massive investment of the sort the Government is...

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

Lengthening beyond 5 cars removes the ability to double them up.

AWC stored 221s off to Cross Country

Just to clarify what I’ve been hearing. There’s no money forthcoming. None at all. Not one brass farthing. Any cost is too much.

AWC stored 221s off to Cross Country

The TMS does not remain static and will be updated at various times for various reasons. Some will be critical updates that are likely to be common across both fleets, but some will be TOC specified and therefore likely to be different. There has never been a need for the two fleets to...

    Cross Country HST withdrawals?

Please send all your wonderful suggestions to the DfT for consideration and costing, as none of these things are within the purview of the franchisee. :s

It also helps reduce costs by removing the training need that HST usage brings. There’s a lot of staff who were still waiting on outstanding traction courses that now no longer need to happen.
