    Flixbus Discussion

I don't really have any reason to visit Leicester but I've used the flixbus service to Sheffield Meadowhall which serves Fosse Park. The last thing the majority of customers on the bus want is a crawl in to and then out of the city centre. I use the Finchley Rd Stop vice Victoria Coach station...

    Thameslink double charging keycard holder

I was quite surprised to get the email about the weekly capping. The impression I got primarily on the southcoast was that development of the key had been overtaken with e and s tickets and that the key would be quietly dropped. Certainly there seems to have been no futher expansion of the Key...

Introducing RailUK Tickets - support the forum when booking your rail tickets!

Train split does seem to throw wobblies every so often with routes from Kent for some reason. I put in Appledore to Shrewsbury no via point and got a route via Brighton, Clapham Junction, Basingstoke, Reading & Newport!

TFW Advance Tickets - South Wales to Manchester

Ive split my journey at Crewe using the LNWR Trent Valley service for some years but normally buy an all operator ticket on the next leg because both the TFW and Northern services are inheritantly unreliable. Last Sunday my Manchester to Crewe northern service was just cancelled no reason given...

    NYMR visit

Ive done day trips a couple of times from the South Coast to Whitby via the NYMR. It needs careful planning. Sometimes its better to go to York and get the bus straight to Pickering its a short walk across the town centre from the bus stop. The alternative is to catch the train to Malton on the...

    LNER - Gold Card Confusion

I rather imagine that someone has been tasked with removing the purchase FROM LNER of Southern Season tickets from the American Express 5% cashback offer!

    Grand Central stranding passengers (28/03)?

I very rarely travel on the ECML but had a recent return trip to Peterborough on a Saturday for football. Travelling on a cross London Advance I was surprised to find the return train ex Leeds near empty just after 6 at Peterborough so it does happen.

Trivia: Rarest BR locos to survive into preservation

BR Class 1600 Pannier Tank 1638 at the K&ESR is the only survivor of a class of 70 all built by BR.

    Bizarre prices from Birmingham

Rail only pays something like 11 pence tax per litre on Diesel so the difference on price based on fuel should be negligable.

Heritage Railways' Policies on Lineside Photographers in Hi-Vis

Indeed a few years back I was driving a tank loco and 5 MK1 coaches about 20 mph away from a station stop, coming around a curve I met 2 quad bikes on the track coming the other way. I immediately dropped the vacuum brake and fortunately they managed to get off the track and down the embankment...

    Grand Central stranding passengers (28/03)?

When Grand Central started I remember some people claiming that the service to Sunderland wasn't financially viable and that it was really little more than an orcats raid on the ECML south of York with the extension to the Durham Coast to justify it's existence. Has the LNER fares changes meant...

How much to hire a train?

I don't think that many class 92s still have active TVM. It needed an update when HS1 opened and this was only done on the Channel Tunnel locos and a couple of extra were done in 2009 funded by the EU to enable freight to run on HS1. Most of the equipment on the others is obsolete and possibly...

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

My last train at the K&ESR last week was 15 to 16 degrees unheated @10am. We did put the steam heat up but without it it would have been "coats and jumpers" rather than unbearable or freezing tbh.

London Heathrow T5 to Hurst Green Station

My experience of Southern conductors/obs is that if you approach them with a TOD code they will print out the tickets for you.

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

At a guess its to even up the braking effect throughout the train to reduce snatching and the risk of wheeelflats.

    Buy before you board…

I would suggest that the majority of the people with advances on the wrong train knew exactly what they were doing and that there was little chance they would be penalised. Why buy an expensive advance or flexible ticket when you know you can bluff your way past the onboard staff every time?

Weybridge -> Birmingham 20th April, fare recommendations

Yes and no, it really depends on where your real journey starts and ends. I live on the edge of Romney Marsh in Kent. Going to the coach hubs in London is much the same as a cross London Rail trip. I prefer Golders Green and Finchley Rd because of their proximity to the M1. Victoria for the...

Weybridge -> Birmingham 20th April, fare recommendations

I've really only discovered coaches in retirement largely as a result of sky high prices and industrial action on rail. The coach product is often actually preferable to the cheap rail options. The seats on flixbus for instance are far better than those on a EMR meridian I was on yesterday. My...

    Buy before you board…

I travelled on an EMR service from St Pancras to Sheffield yesterday afternoon. It's was a 5 car dmu and quite full. As far as I could see there was no disruption. I was in coach C on a cross London Advance. When it came to the ticket check it was apparent that about a third of all travellers...
