BR diesel green to blue livery change..

My photo of two tone green 47256 at Oxford, 22 July 1976. Soon afterwards, 47256 was repainted somewhat anomalously from two tone to all over green, in which freshly repainted condition I remember seeing at Bromsgrove. As class 47's were two tone green or blue, this was an oddity indeed, and I...

The Burtonport Extension of the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway

Slight digression. In J.D.C.A. Prideaux's book on the Irish narrow gauge, there is an interesting vignette about running of the Donegal during the troubles, where Henry Forbes, the general manager, arrested an armed raider intent on disrupting services. Prideaux observes, "This may not have...

Station Announcements back in the days of British Rail.

As heard clearly on the LP, 'Westerns; Diesel Hydraulics on the Western Region in 1974', where a diamond tipped drill of a voice announces in tones that will tolerate neither dissent or nonsense, "Redding! Redding!". Certainly she would never descend to the level of an incident I heard at...

    Deltic on the ECML 1Z55

Friend of mine is on 1E14 and said they could not see the loco, just the coaches. Mind, was not in best place to observe (wrong side of train, people standing in the aisle ... and that is first class as well!).

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

Thank you all for the link ... very informative. Wearing my civil engineering qualifications, my expectation was some form of piling to bypass the failed abutment, except was not sure how they were going to support the bridge structure during the process. Solution proposed is clever, and...

    Senior Citizen Railcard Time Restrictions

As somebody on the cusp of getting a Senior Railcard and some journeys planned, couple of thoughts. As I read the T&C, the restriction does not apply if travelling from a station within the Network area to one outside. The other thought is does the restriction apply to using an all line...

Architecture and/or original Plans of Stations and Lines

Network Rail archive has some material online, Network Rail Archive, and I find the archivists are excellent in finding specific information. Search Engine at the NRM are also helpful, although their archives tend towards rolling stock and operational detail rather than buildings.

compilation of All Railway Stations In England, Scotland and Wales

Disused stations does not claim to be a complete list, although is a fascinating web site. Best place to look is Cobb's atlas. Comprehensive, massive and probably hard to find … got my copy through the bookshop at work and had colleagues asking how much with astonishment.

All line rail rover restriction question

Doh! Can see Milton Keynes on the list. Hang my head in shame at not checking carefully. Thank you for pointing out the situation and looks like I am changing my plans.

All line rail rover restriction question

Terms for the all line rail rover state it is, "NOT valid for boarding or alighting train services ... before 10:00 Mondays to Fridays at ... London Euston". Now I read that as actually alighting at Euston, so it would be acceptable for me to join the 0715 from Manchester Piccadilly (Euston...

Derailment near Carlisle - 19/10/2022 - 1715 Clitheroe Castle Cement Gb to Carlisle N.Y. (6C00)

Couple of incidents in the mid-1970s. One was on GWML near Reading. Class 31 overran exit from a loop and ended up, via a catch point, embedded down a soft embankment. Location was no good for cranes (think the class 66 at Loch Trieg), so recovery was by using steel cables developed for pulling...

Northumberland Line to be re-opened to passengers

Would probably be operationally desirable to have an additional east facing bay. However, will be more than installing new track, as there is electrification equipment to move, the platform will need refurbishment and changes required to passenger circulation onto the platform. Suspect somebody...

    Northern cancellations getting worse

Colleague was planning to get that train on Tuesday and is being less than polite, too be polite concerning her exact words, about Northern. Apparently bus driver did not inspire, including one incident where they were going to miss the Haltwhistle turnoff, so stopped on the A69 and reversed...

    Planning all line rover

Some interesting thoughts. Principal routes still to pen are Worting Jct to Exmouth Jct, Bristol East Jct to Bath (an obvious out and back presents for these two), Westbury to Redbridge, HS1, Liverpool Street to Cambridge, Stone to Colwich Jct and everything north of Inverness. Infill bits...
