Trivia: Rarest BR locos to survive into preservation

Most unlikely survivor would be an unreliable loco, withdrawn long before it was preserved, surviving only by chance in the nether reaches of the network. For example the class 28 D5705. Class withdrawn 1968ish, used by the Research Departmen, preservation from the 1980s, still being restored today.

    Calculating Railway Height

Probably work it out from a big enough sample - are there any with 2 figures after the "." and if so, are they just 10s and 11s?

lostwin - BR in the mid 80's

Woking was a base for engineering trains, so could they have been gathering just before/after the weekend?

How did railtours work in BR days?

I've photos of the opposite, a footex from Reading to Gillingham. Us Kentish spotters were expecting a loco and Mk1s, but it turned up as a 3-car 117 DMMU. Actually rarer in most of Kent than 47 + Mk1s which turned up most summer weekends into the 1980s on seaside excursions from off-region...

    Broadband weather problems

We had intermittent problems with the broadband + phone line when it rained a lot. It turned out to be a poorly-installed bit of wiring outside the house: it had a kink in it, causing the insulation to part just enough to let moisture in and mess up the line. BT/Openreach’s problem so the...

Countries where rail traffic drives on a different side to road traffic

The "Enthusiast's Guide to Travelling the Railways of Europe" site at https://egtre.info/wiki/Main_Page gives lots of info on border crossings: https://egtre.info/wiki/Border_Crossings_-_General_Information and in the individual country sections, it has a "Rule of the road" heading showing left...

    The Highwayman Service

Were you thinking of the later (1980s?) Stagecoach mk2 coaches that got added to an overnight train? Edit: 1992, see the thread over on rmweb https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/33200-1992-stagecoach-rail-mk2-sleeper-service-carriages/ Edit 2: see below!

Sheffield Supertram & Tram Train news

No tracking I suppose. They do appear with actual times on realtimetrains, but only when on the rail network, not south of Tinsley.

If I search for "TT" in the bustimes.org search box, it takes me to here: https://bustimes.org/services/tt-sheffield-parkgate showing the timetable for Sheffield-Parkgate.

is it even possible to reform a Class 508?

Did you mean re-create a 508 in its original 4-car formation as delivered to the Southern Region? Not sure why you'd want to, as it's essentially identical to a 507, and resources/cash for preservation are pretty limited and probably best used elsewhere

    Where has a 195 been?

Yes, they have. e.g. this one https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W32970/2024-03-28/detailed#allox_id=0 (2N34 2230 Leeds to Sheffield). Most of the day, those are 150/158, with the 3-car 150s regular performers, but there is the odd service with 195s, including the first one from...

    Settle & Carlisle Line

I reckon northbound has a better build-up to the scenic bit, starting in urban Leeds, then views of high ground around Ilkley Moor etc, electrics and colour lights giving way to semaphores after Skipton, and finally opening up to the high and wild Pennines.

    Simplon Route Closure Summer 2024

Probably goes via the Gotthard Pass, as it occasionally does/did. I photographed it at Göschenen 10-ish years ago. edit: in fact this pdf brochure shows Gotthard on the map on p15: https://pdfs.belmond.com/Brochure-Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express.pdf alternatively, Arlberg+Brenner.

Interesting journeys in Belgium and the Netherlands

The three-country point is about 100 metres or so from the highest point. I hired a bike in Aachen, and went to the 3CP, down to the impressive Montzen viaduct on the freight line that tunnels under the 3CP, then across to Hergenrath for a train back to Aachen. Photos over on RMWeb at...

Sheffield Supertram & Tram Train news

That BBC article says a ‘further’ 29 car parking spaces, i.e. in addition to what’s already there. I read another item (can’t remember where, sorry) that said the extensive parking at Magna is very under-utilised, so sharing it as a P+R isn’t a problem. 1710958236 Added 20 March and automerged...
