    Stockholm Alranda Border Control

I've seen this a couple of times down the years. Only had it once at Heathrow, had it more at regional airports - nothing better to do maybe? I don't know what the point is really but as you say probably trying to catch money launderers (charitable hat on) - pointless make-work pretend we're...

Should the UK still get involved with foreign affairs/military action etc?

mods note - split from the about conscription Interesting reading some of the recent responses - I've been away in Europe with work. I have to agree with a few others. The UK's glory days are behind us. It's time to politely bow out of world affairs. We are not valued or liked, that much...

    Conscription.

A point I've not seen discussed at all is the state of the Merchant Navy. We don't have the MN sailors or ships to keep the country supplied. I don't know how even the most rabid Torygraph reader can look at the state of this country at the minute and conclude there is any hope whatsoever we...

    Conscription.

I suppose the senior officers have to keep their revolving door to a cushy military contractor job open!! 8-) As an aside to this thread since it's been discussed, I understand the Swedish conscription model relies on the kids expressing an interest in a military career, and it hasn't been...

    Conscription.

I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of support this got in the readers comments in the Daily Heil and the Telegraph. I suspect it wasn't the response they were aiming for. As others have pointed out this is grandstanding by senior military to keep their gravy train running.

    Dangerous boarding procedures at Euston

I've had to use Euston and Avanti a few times recently, including a trip to north Wales during the Day of Doom just before Christmas. The procedures for boarding are appalling, and I vividly remember discussing with a fellow passenger (who I suspect may be a member of our forum..) that unless...

    Stockholm Alranda Border Control

Agreed I go to the US fairly often and they can be slow but not overtly obstructive - but the US has this reputation as a 'nasty' place whereas Sweden is supposed to be nice and smiley... My best Sweden experience was being told by the woman on the exit booth that 'You have miserable and...

    Stockholm Alranda Border Control

I've got good professional connections with Sweden and go there fairly often. The Arlanda border control are awful, not only the way in but on exit control as well where they seem to be as slow as humanely possible. They seem to deliberately cause problems and are actually worse than the...

Rail bosses spend £10,000 a week on flights – because it’s cheaper than trains

The booking system we've got in my bit of government land will give you a telling off 'out of policy' if you try and book business class (so Club Europe in the case of BA shorthaul) and will spit the dummy. That's actually true for all bands of employment now, even if we are booking for special...

Rail bosses spend £10,000 a week on flights – because it’s cheaper than trains

I made this mistake of relying on the train yesterday for travel. Wish I'd booked a domestic flight but our government travel booking system discourages it... And that is largely because of headlines like this, which generate knee jerk reactions, 'seen to be doing something' and all that....

Emergency at Leighton Buzzard - travel advice required

There are some services operating. Got on a service to Manchester, booted off 9 car set to an 11 car set for our 'safety', terrible crush at Euston trying to get everyone on. Seemed to be an incident on platform.

Emergency at Leighton Buzzard - travel advice required

Sorry to be insensitive but... Need to get to Manchester for business. Get hotel in London and try and travel tomorrow morning or risk it and wait?

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

I'm also a regular on this route, noticeable how the speed restriction has gone down and down.. There has been some prep work, clearing vegetation and preparing a work area on the upstream side for a while now. There were vans of some specialist 'sinking building' contractor there on Saturday...

How much "new" capacity has the Elizabeth line actually gained?

Same experience at Canary Wharf yesterday evening! I had to go into London to run an errand, for the journey back the planner suggested the Elizabeth line to Reading, then Thames Valley service as the best option. I was actually looking forward to my first 'through' experience. No - didn't...

Do you notice how a Driver drives?

I've noticed on GWR there is quite a difference between how the 387's are driven on 'fast' routes versus local stopping services. On local services there is often a bit of a crawl to a halt, even if the service is late running - on fast services the departure out of Didcot can be very...

    Euston to Anglesey

Aha, this might be a good option, looks like there is a possible way in here! Cheers. Cheers, looking into it!
