Crazy expensive and unnecessary - aluminium bodyshell aside, how much of the 484s is 'rather old' anyway? TfL gave them modern interiors and replacement bogies while Vivarail replaced the cabs, electrics, motors etc.

Looks like they are working on the bridge at Morton Common/Avenue Road north of Sandown, there'll be more closures for the bridges north of St Johns and Ryde Pier itself in the near future too. It's a shame more wasn't done during the upgrade.

Looks like the centre car has a snazzy battery charge graphic, which changes when viewed from different angles - can't recall seeing that on a train before?

10 years later it has happened again - Monktonmead Brook, which the railway follows from Smallbrook Junction, has once again turned the railway into a river, flooding the track and depot and filling the tunnel to the brim as can be seen on Railcam. Track washouts and damaged rolling stock appear...

The most visually interesting route - by a country mile - would be ferry to Yarmouth, a very pleasant place to break the journey, and then taking the bus to Newport and again to Ryde. Double deckers are a great way to see the island.

Bingo. I wasn't expecting you to tbh, it's what ordinary passengers think that ultimately matters.

Vivarail units have been working my local line for 18 months now so not only do I know what "ordinary passengers" among my friends and family think, but I've also overheard plenty of passengers and even a few staff too - and so far I've seen nothing to suggest reactions to the TfW fleet have...

The last D78 was withdrawn 6 years ago - perhaps a District Line regular might find the 484s seating layout familiar, but IMHO a non-enthusiast recognising the 230 interior as ex-D78 just doesn't seem credible without some prior knowledge. I say that as someone who was always amazed at how...

Only an enthusiast would know that - what's relevant is whether they, and the interior as a whole, look dated and/or 'worn out' to ordinary passengers and I've seen nothing to suggest they do.

Sure, to an enthusiast who knows it still resembles the post 2000s refurb interior but - IMO at least - that design doesn't even look dated after a refresh, let alone 'worn out' and ordinary passengers seem none the wiser.

Have you set foot on either? Aside from the colour red I'm struggling... Not only was the D78's original interior refurb more comprehensive than the (highly regarded IIRC) 455s for SWT, but TfW's have also gained air-con, toilets, LED lighting, new seating with tables and walkthrough gangways...
