When can I start using my Senior Railcard?

I've just received my first senior railcard in the post. I applied bang on the two weeks before my 60th birthday and therefore have almost a couple of weeks to go before reaching that milestone. There is only an expiry date, being one year and one week after my 60th, but no start date. The...

    SWR Strike Timetables

I'm just starting this thread now as SWR have stated that they're going to publish their strike timetables tomorrow (Wednesday 15th). Any advance info of course welcome!

    SWR Delay Repay query

My train arrived at Waterloo yesterday morning very late due to a failed train at Queenstown Road. Late arrival differed according to source: Public timetable: 58L RTT: 60L Reported by guard: 60L Based on the above should I submit a claim for 30-59min or 60+min? Ideally of course I'd rather...

    SWR Class 458 speculation

The new timetable seems to have thrown up enough surplus 458s given that all the Reading peak extras have been removed. Maybe they'll start going away for refurb soon.

Is there anywhere that a 10 car 458 hasn't yet been?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-701-aventra-trains-for-south-western-railway.148717/page-31#post-4254637 Is there anywhere that a 10 car 458 hasn't yet been? It's not unusual for them to work on the inner suburban lines.

    Feltham area resignalling

Can anyone shed any light on the resignalling that's currently taking place, given that the Feltham area isn't due for resignalling until CP6. It's more than replacing the signal heads with LEDs. The whole posts are being replaced and in some cases in a different location.

Alternatives to power sockets on trains?

Mod Note: Split from this thread. Sorry mate, I may be a bit old fashioned but what alternative "solution" is there to charging a laptop other than to plug it into the mains? And if it's so outmoded why are SWT having powerpoints on their Class 707s and why are bus and coach operators...

    SWT Class 450 WiFi

...was switched on today. I only noticed when my phone alerted me to it. It was quite fast, but then I was probably the only person on the train using it.

    Class 458/5 - some details

There's an interesting article in the new edition of Modern Railways about the forthcoming Class 458 lengthening project. Things that stand out: Seating will be converted to 2+2 with 1+1 around door areas, ie inner suburban format, 458 cabs will be fitted with a conventional gangway and...

More praise for SWT from Barry Doe

I see in "Rail" that Barry Doe is continuing his love-in with SWT. He has complied a league table of the "best" TOCs and of course SWT comes out top, scoring 9 or 10 in all his categories. SWT certainly isn't the worst TOC, but what's so wonderful about it? I use it every day and my...

Windsor lines platform extensions - update

Work has now started in earnest on platform extensions at Ashford and North Sheen, with some preparatory work in evidence at Whitton. There must, surely, be an announcement from DfT soon on the extra rolling stock.....

    Windsor lines platform extensions

I see work has at last on the 10-car platform extensions on SWT's Windsor side. The crossovers between fast and slow lines have been moved about 3 coaches towards London and the up slow line resignal resited. This allows the platforms to be extended. Does anyone know of work starting in other...

Official - 444s most reliable trains in UK

From SWT website: "South West Trains wins coveted industry top awards for outstanding fleet reliability · Most reliable electric and diesel fleets in the country · Awarded three top prizes for reliability · Most improved award for Class 158 trains South West Trains passengers are...

    Class 458 overhauls

8013 is the first unit back from its C6 overhaul. Despite SWT claiming it would be a "refresh" it does in fact only appear to be an overhaul. The standard class seat trim has been renewed, as has the flooring. Trouble is the flooring is the same as before - brightly coloured, soft...

Anyone have any idea of what times it will be there between?

    Yellow ends

As I understand it, all rolling stock using NR track must have a yellow warning panel, but that LU trains are exempt. Why are they exempt? Also, are yellow ends required for trains that operate exclusively on HS1 (eg Eurostar), which does not come under NR? If they do, then presumably ICEs...

    Class 458 refresh

I see from the SWT "online chat" held last week that a refresh of the Class 458s will start in September. I believe the seat cushions (standard class only) and flooring will be replaced, but no idea what other changes there may be. I wonder if there will be a repaint.

    Airtrack and Reading station

Now that Airtrack has stalled and is could very well be dead, I'm wondering if this will result in any changes to the Reading redevelopment. Currently, there would be a third platform for Waterloo/Airtrack services, with Gatwick services diverted to the other side of the station via the reopened...

    7 x Class 460 up for grabs???

Hot on the heels of the 180 post.... It has previously been mentioned by a number of sources (and in the Sussex RUS) that the GatEX 460s are coming off lease in December this year when Southern have the full compliment of 442s. This appears all along to have been linked to Porterbrook's bid...
