    80sFreightliner lengths v Modern liners/intermodal

I may have seen a thread about this before, but could not find it. Some modern intermodal /liners are 24-30 wagons in length. When chatting to a guy a few years ago at Acton Bridge, he reckoned some Coatbridge -Daventry Tescos are 40 wagon lengths. I saw a Wentloog - Daventry last week at...

    Incident at Bletchley

A few reports on Twitter/X suggesting Euston is in a bit of chaos as an incident at Bletchley has suspended some services. Anyone know anymore ?

    Weaver Junction accident c. 1975

Was there a collision in the 1970s, at Weaver Junction? Freightliner and a tank train? I seem to recall someone mentioned on this forum some time ago and think I read about it in an article some time ago. I cant recall the detail. Anyone on here recall this incident?

    Traksy/Realtime

Seems neither are picking up any data. I think I read this before. I'm freezing at Nortoft Lane. Euston - Birmingham went through 10 minutes back and it is on Traksy nog even as far as Long Buckby.

BOC Tanks on WCML and branches

As a kid, back in the 80s, I used to see near my home (Dudley Port) 6F57 BOC tanks around 4pm (after school) from Wolverhampton to Ditton. Usually a 40 or doubled headed 25s. The sidings at Wolverhampton had no OLE. I know there were electrically hauled workings too - not sure where they went...

Overcrowding on Chiltern Line: How can this be resolved?

During the last three Fridays in November and the first ones in December, the 10am from Dorridge to Marylebone has been badly overcrowded. Once at Leamington Spa, it is standing room only. Just a 3 car set. Surely they could add another DMU? What is the barrier to this? Lack of a crew getting...

Lockerbie Air Crash - Impact on the railway?

Apologies if this comes across as a bit morbid. I was listening to a Podcast about this on Friday. It came on randomly, when I was listening in the car. I recall the evening vividly as I saw the newsflash. And I always wondered if the WCML was affected. At the time, I imagined it would be and...

WCML and tributaries - Goods Loops

Hi, a question for those involved with timetabling, I imagine. I was chatting to my dad about the use of the goods loops at Tipton (Mond Gas - old Gas works which also had sidings). They are between Dudley Port and Tipton. Used to be controlled by Watery Lane. In the 80s, they had a fair bit of...

Line speeds on WCML compared (80s v 2020s)

I’ve been on the Train Simulator with a Pendolino tonight. 125 mph is the highest in certain sections. 110 elsewhere. Is 110mph the slow line limits, or can125mph be done on these? Elsewhere, Cov - Rugby and Four Ashes -Stafford is highest on Brum loops, with 75 on the Grand Jn and Stour...

    WCML signalling

I wonder if someone can explain to me some of the advancements on WCML signalling. Is it still 4 aspect in the original sense? Are there any changes since the 80s? And the flashing yellows- does this highlight a junction access? Cheers

1Y53 Euston - Birm Int & 1Y64 Birm Int to Euston

Will the driver be a poster on here. I’m taking photos at Berkswell and the driver ‘toned’ me with his horn twice. First up on the way into Birmingham and then when I wasn’t looking ( head in Traksy) the cheeky bugger. I had a start at that one!

WCML disruption from Birmingham NS to Rugby

Currently at Hampton-In-Arden. It’s a bit disrupted to say the least! Pendos-aplenty. Three freights , two 350s and a couple of XC Voyagers in 40 minutes. The Colwich work is having an impact along this stretch of line. 2 Brum- Euston LNWR services have been cancelled(13.49 &14.19).

    Castlethorpe on the WCML

Earlier this evening I passed through Castlethorpe. It still has the layout of the old station and could easily be used? When did it close - 1960s? It could still be used (I bet there's a decent catchment of people who would use it) and has there been any plans or campaigns to re-open? Or would...

ZX Spectrum Simulator game: Class 87

This is a long shot, but I wondered if anyone back in the day had, or can remember now , about a Train Driving Simulator which went from Euston to Crewe on a class 87. It was text only, as far as I recall, and came out around 1987-88. I wondered if it could also be found on a website somewhere...

Euston to Birmingham New Street 'stoppers'/semi fasts : now and BR

On Tuesday evening, I travelled on the 18.56 from Euston to Birmingham New Street (I went as far as Hampton-In-Arden). This service is 'fast' to Leighton Buzzard (well Ledburn Jn, where it crosses ot the slow lines) and this is done in around 30 minutes. Then it's all stations to Birmingham...

    Freight Traffic on WCML

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but the variety of freight traffic on WCML ( and everywhere) is less diverse than it was in the 80s. Is this the decline of industry? BOC and oil tank trains are examples i can think of. In addition, class 6 railfreight/speedlink too. And the coal traffic...

Murder case on Northampton Loop in 1985

Please don't read anymore if this may trigger a bad reaction. A few years ago, I read about this murder on the WCML (Northampton Loop) in March 1985. It is a terrible story, horrific. I don't recall this. RIP Janet Maddocks. https://www.btphg.org.uk/?page_id=8519
